By the grace of Hashem,
Fifth light[1] 5713,
Brooklyn,
To my close relative, the Rav and tzaddik*, whose renown and
glory are established, of an illustrious family, descendant of
great Sages, Rabbi Menachem Binyamin Ben Tziyon[2] shlita,
Greetings and blessings,
I was pleased to learn from my relative, the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Shmuel Zalmanov, that you are feeling better. May Hashem grant that this improvement continue.
Our Sages say that one must know how to ascend in the realm of holiness — maalin bakodesh*. Several poskim* even consider that this is a matter of Torah* law. You will consult the references cited on this subject by the Sdei Chemed*, in his Klalim, letter Mem, principle 194, as well as the Me'asef Lechol HaMachanos, Orach Chaim, chapter 25, paragraph 12. On the other hand, the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe, Orach Chaim, at the end of chapter 34, considers that this principle was instituted by our Sages. Nevertheless, he does not adopt a clear-cut decision at the end of this paragraph. He does so, in several other texts, when he does not definitively determine a position. But more will not be said here.
The Rambam*, in his Hilchos Deos*, at the beginning of chapter 4, affirms that being in good health is an integral part of the ways of Hashem[3]. He also says, at the beginning of Hilchos Rotzeach*, that the body is the property of Hashem. You will consult, on this subject, the commentary of the Radbaz on the Rambam, Hilchos Sanhedrin, end of chapter 18, the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe, Hilchos Nizkei HaGuf, paragraph 4. You will also see the words of the Alter Rebbe, in his Shulchan Aruch* Orach Chaim, second edition, at the end of chapter 4.
It has already been explained, at a friendly chassidic farbrengen*[4], in what manner the lights of Chanukah* emphasize the necessity of this addition. They were instituted on account of the lights kindled in the Beis HaMikdash*, and they derive from them. Despite this, they depart from them in various respects. One of these differences is the following.
The lights of the Beis HaMikdash* always have the same number, whereas those of Chanukah* are in increasing number. Perhaps it is possible to advance, in this regard, the following explanation. The lights of the Beis HaMikdash* are a divine revelation and not the result of a war, of darkness, of the impurity of the oils found in the Sanctuary. On the contrary, they were "a testimony borne before all the creatures of the world of the love[5] toward Israel," according to the commentary of Rashi on tractate Shabbos 22b.
In contrast, the lights of Chanukah* were obtained at the conclusion of the darkness that resulted from the war against the impious Greeks and the wayward Jews, according to the book of Daniel, chapter 11. You will consult, at this reference, the commentaries, among others, of Rashi and the Metzudos. Yossifon[6], who is cited by the commentary of Rashi, gives a long description of it.
From this point of view, the lights of Chanukah* indeed surpass those of the Beis HaMikdash*. They are kindled in increasing number. Moreover, there are eight of them and not seven. The same difference exists between the harp of the World to Come and that of the Beis HaMikdash*[7], according to tractate Arachin 13b, on which Likkutei Torah* Tazria, page 21d, comments. You will also consult the responsa of the Rashba, vol. 1, chapter 9.
Furthermore, the lights of Chanukah* are immutable, as the Ramban says at the beginning of Parshas Beha'aloscha. It is in this sense that the clarity resulting from darkness surpasses that which is created in a luminous manner from the outset, as the Tanya* explains in chapters 26, 27, and 36. You will also consult the Zohar, vol. 3, page 47b.
In the same way, one may consider that the service of Hashem with one's body and through one's body, when the latter is whole and in good health, surpasses that of the soul. You will consult, in this regard, the Tanya* at the same reference and Iggeres HaKodesh*, at the end of chapter 8.
With my respects and my blessing,

[3] The Rebbe notes in a footnote: "This is the formulation found in all the editions of the Rambam I have been able to consult, but one may inquire on this subject. It seems evident that there is here an oversight by the early editors, taken up by the later ones, who did not notice it, all the more so since those who study Hilchos Deos are few. In fact, it should say 'being in good health is an integral part of the ways of the service of Hashem.' For the end of the previous chapter says that 'one must ensure that one's body is whole and strong. He who acts in this manner throughout his life serves Hashem in an effective manner, permanently, since his body is ready for this.' The Rambam therefore continues, in chapter 4, by emphasizing that 'being in good health is an integral part of the ways of the service of Hashem,' or further 'of the means of perceiving Hashem.' His conclusion, as well as the proof he cites, allows one to establish that this is indeed so: 'For he must understand and perceive the Creator.' Now, I have seen no commentator on the Rambam who poses this question." See also, on this subject, letter no. 1647.
