To the rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Greetings and blessings,

I duly received your letter of 27 Teves and the following one. May Hashem permit each of us, within the entire Jewish people, to carry through the mission entrusted to him here below, in moral and physical tranquility, with expansiveness of mind.

You know the decree of the Heavenly Court according to which, thanks to the mesirus nefesh* shown by the Alter Rebbe*[2] for the teaching of Chassidus*, those who are bound to him and follow his ways can have the upper hand, in all that concerns Torah, yiras shamayim* and good conduct. You will consult on this subject the summaries and notes on the Tanya*, p. 122.

All therefore depends on you, as the Maggid* of Mezeritch and the Alter Rebbe* explain regarding the Mishnah*: "Know what is above you"[3].

You mentioned your birthday, and may Hashem therefore grant you long days and good years. You will spread an increased clarity to those around you, "the candle (which) is a mitzvah* and the Torah (which) is light," as well as the luminary of the Torah, that is, Chassidus*.

You know the explanation of the Baal Shem Tov* concerning hashgachah pratis*[4], even if one does not always understand its meaning. It happens that I received, these days, a photocopy of a letter of the Rebbe Rashab*[5] which he addressed to someone[6] on the occasion of his fifty-eighth birthday[7]. I enclose it, on the condition that you return it to me by return mail. Obviously, you can copy it, if you wish.

With my blessing for success, material and spiritual, in good health, and greeting all the chassidim*,

קבלתי מכתבו מכ"ז טבת ושלאחריו... יזכהו השי"ת ואותנו בכלל בתוך כל ישראל למלאות כאו"א תפקידו בעלמא דין מתוך מנוחת הנפש ומנוחת הגוף ובהרחבת הדעת, וכבר ידוע פס"ד בי"ד של מעלה, אשר בגלל המס"נ של כ"ק רבינו הזקן על תורת החסידות, הנה בכל ענין של תורה יראת שמים ומדות טובות תהי' יד מקושריו והולכי בעקבותיו על העליונה (עיין קיצורים והערות לתניא דף קכ"ב) וא"כ ממך ובך הדבר תלוי, וכפי' הרב המגיד ואדמו"ר הזקן במשנה ששנו חכמים דע מה למעלה - ממך.

ובקשר להודעתו ע"ד יום ההולדת שלו, הנה יה"ר מהשי"ת שיהי' לאריכות ימים ושנים טובות ויפיץ אור בסביבתו בתוספת מרובה בנר מצוה תורה אור ומאור שבתורה זוהי תורת החסידות.

ידוע תורת הבעש"ט בענין השגחה פרטית (אף שלא בכל פעם מבינים רמזי ההשגחה), וכיון שימים אלו קבלתי פוטו ממכתב כ"ק אדמו"ר (מוהרש"ב) נ"ע מ"ש לאחד בענין יום ההולדת דשנת הח"ן, הנני מסגירו פה, ובלבד שבדואר החוזר יחזירו לי, מובן שאם ברצונו יכול להעתיקו.

בברכה להצלחה בגשמיות וברוחניות מתוך בריאות הנכונה ובפ"ש כל אנ"ש שיחיו.
