Greetings and blessings,

You raise the question of your son's coming here, and you surely know what I think of it. At the present time, the possibilities for action in Eretz HaKodesh* are very considerable, including for young people, who must therefore make use of the kochos* they have in this domain.

As concerns your son more specifically, he must transform the yeshivah of Lod into a Lubavitcher yeshivah. For at present, the bochurim* who were there and have come here for some time lack hiskashrus* and a sense of duty.

I do not know precisely why this is so. Yet this is important for the talmidim* who come from Eretz HaKodesh. For they have the right to leave that country only under certain conditions, and in particular, as regards them, for the purpose of studying Torah. Consequently, when they come here and act according to their own will, one is justified in asking whether, in such a case, the Sages give permission to leave Eretz HaKodesh.

I do not wish to say more, for these remarks should in fact be conveyed to the hanhalah* of the yeshivah in Lod, and in this instance I was speaking only with regard to your son. I therefore think that he must spend at least this winter and the coming summer in Lod. Then, in the middle of the summer, I will receive the opinion of the yeshivah regarding him. At that time, we will discuss this question once more.

... במ"ש אודות בנו... שי' ע"ד הנסיעה לכאן. הנה בטח ידוע לו השקפתי בזה, שבזמנים אלו יש כר נרחב במאד לפעולות באה"ק ת"ו וגם לבני הנוער, הרי יכולים הם להשתמש בכחותיהם בכיוון זה, ובפרט בנוגע לבנו הנה צריך להפוך הישיבה בלוד לישיבת תו"ת דליובאוויטש, כי לע"ע הרי... שבאו משם ונמצאים פה משך איזה זמן, הנה מורגש חוסר המשמעת והאחריות. איני יודע על ברור סיבת הדבר. ונוגע זה ביחוד להתלמידים הבאים מאה"ק ת"ו וכמו שאמרתי להם אשר היציאה מאה"ק ת"ו הותרה רק בתנאים ידועים ובנוגע אליהם הוא ע"מ ללמוד תורה, ובמילא כשבאים לכאן ומתנהגים בהנהגה מתאימה לרצונם הם, צריך עיון ובירור אם זהו ההיתר שאליו נתכוונו רז"ל וכו' ואין כאן מקום להאריך, כי באמת הרי צריך זה להכתב להנהלת ישיבת לוד, אלא שבאתי אליו בהערה זו בנוגע לבנו מר... שי' אשר לכן דעתי שעכ"פ חורף זה וכן ימי הקיץ יהי' בלוד ובאמצע הקיץ הרי בטח אקבל מהנהלת הישיבה חוו"ד עליו, ונתייעץ עוד הפעם בזה.
