Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2039 — Tzedakah

To the great Rav, man of stature, distinguished and refined,

of eminent lineage, prominent personality,

chassid who fears Hashem and possesses broad knowledge,

Rav David Sasson,

Greetings and blessings,

I have received with joy your precious letter of 3 Shevat, which contained photocopies of three ancient manuscripts confirming the halachic ruling of the Alter Rebbe, author of the Tanya and the Shulchan Aruch, according to which the word 'daka' in the verse "He whose private parts are crushed (daka) shall not enter the assembly of Hashem" must be written with an alef* [1].

You are no doubt aware of the many opinions that have been expressed on this subject. All of them are cited in Mishnas Avraham*.

I must also mention what was related to me by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit shall protect us. When he was in Worms, he saw a Sefer Torah which, according to local tradition, was written by the Maharam of Rothenburg [2]. 'Daka' was written there with an alef. He also saw it in a Sefer Torah of Prague which, according to ancient local tradition, was corrected by Ezra HaSofer*.

As a token of thanks, a separate parcel has been sent to you containing the Sdei Chemed* of Ch. Ch. M. [3], who is Sephardic.

יקרת מכתבו מי"ג בשבט קבלתי בשמחה ובו ג' תמונות מג' כתבי יד עתיקים, אשר מהם ניכר אמיתת הפס"ד של כ"ק אדמו"ר הזקן בעל התניא והשלחן ערוך לכתוב מלת דכא (בפסוק לא יבוא פצוע דכא) באלף.

ובטח ידוע לכת"ר רבוי הדיעות שנאמרו בזה, אשר כלם נקבצו בספר משנת אברהם.

וראוי לציין מה ששמעתי מכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, אשר בהיותו בעיר ורמיזא (ווארמס) ראה שם הספר תורה שקבלה בידם שכתבה מהר"ם זצ"ל מרוטנברג וכתוב שם דכא באלף. וכן ראה גם כן בספר תורה בפראג שע"פ הקבלה בידם מדור לדור הגיהה עזרא הסופר.

לאות הכרת תודה נשלח לכת"ר בחבילה מיוחדת ה"שדי חמד" לחח"מ הספרדי.
