To my relative, the Rav, distinguished chassid who fears Hashem,

Rav Schneur Zalman [1],

Greetings and blessings,

I was particularly joyful to receive your letter of 9 Adar, written in your own hand. Our Sages note in tractate Megillah 16a that "when they rise, they reach the stars." So too will it be for you, and your health will become firmer and firmer. I thank you for giving me good news in this regard.

You know the expression of our holy Rebbeim*, which is a rule of conduct for daily life. They gave their brachos "materially and spiritually," thus establishing a connection between these two notions and placing the material before the spiritual.

It is therefore obvious that an improvement in physical health must immediately bring with it that of moral health. Moreover, physical health is in itself important, and the Rambam rules at the beginning of chapter 4 of Hilchos Deos that "the health of the body belongs to the avodas Hashem*."

On the occasion of your birthday, which will be the 18th of Adar, Hashem will grant you long days and good years, which will be, according to the saying [2] of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, in the name of his father, the Rebbe Rashab, "good in every sense of the term."

Moreover, one may inquire about a woman's well-being through her husband [3], and you will therefore convey my regards to your wife. You will live together long days and good years, which will be pleasant, materially and spiritually.

שמחתי ביותר לקבל מכתבו מט' אדר כתוב בכתב ידו, וע"פ מרז"ל (מגילה טז, א) כשהם עולים עולים לכוכבים הרי בטח גם בדידי' ילך מצב בריאותו הלוך וטוב ות"ח על הבשו"ט בזה. וידוע מנהג נשיאינו הק' שזהו הוראה בחיים היום יומיים שבברכותיהם הוא הלשון בגשמיות וברוחניות. היינו מקשרים ומקדימים גשמיות לרוחניות וא"כ הנה הטבת הבריאות בגשמיות מוכרחת כי גורמת תומ"י הטבת הבריאות ברוחניות ובפרט שגם מצד עצמו ענין הוא וכפסק הרמב"ם הלכות דיעות רפ"ד היות הגוף בריא מדרכי השם הוא.

ולקראת יום הולדתו ח"י אדר הבע"ל הנה יה"ר מהשי"ת שיהי' לאריכות ימים ושנים וכפתגם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר בשם אביו כ"ק אדמו"ר (מוהרש"ב) טובות עם כל הפירושים. ושואלים בשלום אשה ע"י בעלה הנה נא לפרוש בשלום זוגתו תחי' ויאריכו ימיהם ושנותיהם יחד בטוב ובנעימים בגשמיות וברוחניות.
