Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2051 — Shidduchim

Volume 7 · Letter 185

By the grace of Hashem,

12 Adar 5713,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

I have just received your letter of 8 Adar in which you mention your marriage and tell me that, according to the natural ways [1], it is impossible. There is in no way anything new in this. It has already been said that contracting a marriage is as difficult as splitting the Yam Suf*, of which we know how great a miracle it was. Despite this, every person ultimately succeeds in becoming engaged, in marrying, and in building a binyan adei ad*. So too will it be for you.

Forget all the difficulties you must face in this domain, and take the proper resolve that this is one of the mitzvos of the Torah. It is said that "HaKadosh Baruch Hu does not act with stratagem toward His creatures" [2]. He Himself asks that this mitzvah be put into practice, and He will therefore grant the means for it when the time comes.

Nevertheless, one must consistently make use of the natural means, and our Sages note that "it is the way of a man to seek a woman." In order to attain this even more quickly, you will undertake, without making it a vow, to give every morning before davening one franc to tzedakah*.

Obviously, you will also keep the three daily shiurim* instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe. They are well known and pertain to Chumash, Tehillim and Tanya.

With my brachah and in expectation of good news regarding what has just been said,

Notes:

[1] See, on this subject, letter no. 2042.

[2] He therefore does not ask for what it is impossible to do.
