Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2089 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 7 · Letter 224 · To: grand Rav
B'ezras Hashem*,
27 Nissan 5713,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem*
and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Yechiel Michel,[1]
Greetings and blessings,
A) I received, before Pesach*, your undated letter. I was glad to learn that you have settled in the shul* of Rav M. M. Kupershtuch, alav hashalom*,[2] and that you have settled all the issues concerning my relative, Rav Chen.
May Hashem* grant you success, in this shul* and in your surroundings, in order to glorify and to disseminate "the candle (which) is a mitzvah* and the Torah* (which) is light," together with the luminary of the Torah*, that is, the teaching of Chassidus*, its conduct and its customs.
B) Concerning the second day of Yom Tov*,[3] you think that one must make a distinction between those going to Eretz HaKodesh* and those leaving that land.
The passages of the Talmud* dealing with this question, tractates Pesachim 51a and Megillah 19a, establish that such a distinction has no place in halachah*, including when it concerns the more rigorous conduct of a particular place, the tractate Pesachim asking: "Which place depends on the other?" Of course, this does not concern the matter at hand.
You analyze the words of the Alter Rebbe* in his Shulchan Aruch*, at the end of chapter 496, and you note a difference between paragraphs 7 and 11. One may consider that paragraph 7 is clarified by paragraph 11, which indicates how it must be interpreted, since there is a controversy on this subject.
On various occasions, the Alter Rebbe* proceeds in this way in his Shulchan Aruch*. He copies the details of the law as he found them in the books of the poskim* who preceded him, just like the rule issued by the Rambam* on this matter.
C) You raise a question regarding "lizman."[4] I wrote that this term appears in the Siddur of the Shenei Luchos HaBris*. In the edition you have, you found "lazman."
I was, in fact, alluding to the first edition. Subsequently, there was an intervention by the printers, who modified several prayers, so that one spoke of the Siddur of the Shenei Luchos HaBris* only because of its commentary. Even more, in this case, they did not even know that such a difference existed.
D) You ask whether one should answer Amen, in Birkas HaMazon*, after the words "al yechasreinu." I once asked my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, about this. He answered me that he does not do so.
Moreover, one of those close to the Rebbe Rashab* answered Amen out loud, in his presence, at that point. The Rebbe* smiled and said nothing. Perhaps one relies on the end of the brachah*, which is "venomar Amen." Nonetheless, here too I did not see those present answer Amen.
This gives me the opportunity to underscore how curious it is that certain prayers conclude with "venomar Amen," yet those who hear these words do not do so. It is fitting to look into this question.
E) Concerning the brachah* "Who has freed me from the punishment of this one,"[5] you ask me whether one should say Hashem*'s Name and mention His Kingship in reciting it. It seems to me that the answer to this question has already been printed.[6] Indeed, one does not say Hashem*'s Name and one does not mention His Kingship.
This is why this brachah* was printed in this manner in the Siddur Tehillas Hashem* of Rostov, which is precise.
The masters of Chassidus* did indeed say Hashem*'s Name and mention His Kingship, as is explained in a sichah* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, but such conduct must not be adopted by all. This is what my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, explained to me.
With my blessing for success in your sacred mission, in good health,

[4] And not "lazman," in the brachah of Shehecheyanu. The Rebbe's correspondent is alluding to the "Haggadah with commentaries and customs" of which the Rebbe is the author, on p. 10.
[5] Recited by the father, at the bar mitzvah of his son.
[6] The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "Hayom Yom, 12 Kislev, where it is written: the responsa Yad Yitzchak, vol. 3, ch. 303, the Yaavetz, the Maharsham of Brezan say that one acts well in this manner. So states the Shaarei Ephraim."
