Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2090 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 7 · Letter 225 · To: dirigeants de l’association gérant la caisse
B'ezras Hashem*,
27 Nissan 5713,
Brooklyn,
To the leaders of the association managing the fund
of the talmidim* of Yeshivas Lubavitch,
to whom Hashem* will grant long life,
Greetings and blessings,
I received with pleasure your letter describing your activities and your report. May Hashem* grant you success in your mission, both material and spiritual.
It is surprising that an institution connected with my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, would limit its expenses by establishing that they must not exceed its income. It seems to me that you are the only institution within the four cubits of Lubavitch to adopt such a position.
I would not have intervened were I not afraid that such an attitude might have the effect of limiting accomplishments, including when they are necessary. It is surely unnecessary to remind you of the need to have bitachon* in Hashem*, in a general manner.
I wish, therefore, only to point out a single matter to you and to clarify it for you. This bitachon* in Hashem* must also be marked in this domain. You must understand that, if your expenses are relatively greater, you will surely discover other sources of income.
Furthermore, perhaps it is precisely in this way that you will obtain them. Thus Chassidus* specifies the difference between the limbs of the body and the receptacles. The former do not merely contain vitality. They draw it down.[1] Thus, if you assemble the channels available to these limbs, you will draw down increased vitality.
As a consequence of all this, you must have means at your disposal of which you can make use in case of deficit. To that end, I am sending you a loan, in the amount of two hundred shekels, drawn from one of the funds at my disposal. In this way, you immediately have the possibility of increasing expenses by this amount, relative to income.
I extend my blessing to all those who manage this fund, participate in it or offer their help, and that Hashem* may allow the Chabad* movement to grant loans not on account of physical necessity, but rather in order to be the receptacle for the attribute of chesed*,[2] as it is found in the spiritual world of Atzilus*, as a sichah* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, delivered in 5701,[3] states.
With my blessing for success and for all good,
Notes
[1] Which is not the case for receptacles, which contain but do not draw down.
