B'ezras Hashem*,

8 Iyar 5713,

Brooklyn,

To my relative, the great Rav and distinguished chassid* who fears

Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Gershon[1] and his wife, the Rabbanis* Gessya,

Greetings and blessings,

A) I received with pleasure your letter of last week, and I was satisfied to learn that you yourselves observe, with your eyes of flesh, the improvement of your own situation. May Hashem* grant that we be able to convey good news to one another, always and every day.

B) For some time now, I have drawn the attention of those who teach publicly,[2] or even privately, to the necessity of including, in their teaching, the frequent and customary laws of daily life that are found, for the most part, in the Shulchan Aruch* Orach Chaim.

If lack of time prevents developing this study, one will at least teach them from the summary of the Shulchan Aruch* and from the explanations found in the various siddurim*,[3] for example the Derech HaChaim, of the author of the Chavas Daas. It is indeed indispensable that one know the conduct it is fitting to adopt, the brachos* one must recite, the passages of tefillah* during which it is permitted to interrupt.

It is a particular merit to guide a man toward what must be his ultimate purpose — that is, yiras Shamayim* and observance of His mitzvos*. All this is clearly explained elsewhere and requires no further explanation, especially when the teaching is delivered by a Rav, who receives particular strengths in order to be able to exercise a positive influence on his surroundings.

C) I am responding to the description that you give me of your communal activity, in particular in the educational domain. The immense importance of all this is difficult to imagine. Consequently, you should not, in my view, think of withdrawing.

The time has come to take full consciousness of the necessity of resolutely abandoning compromises. One could, before, ask oneself whether it was justified to abandon a part of what is essential in order to preserve the other part. And, I do say that one could ask oneself whether it is so, for already at that time, making a compromise on a part of the essential led, in the long run, to denigrating it completely. Nonetheless, at the present time, after several decades of experience, it is quite clear that it is so.

One can, in fact, observe that the various and sundry compromises have had the most catastrophic consequences. One must therefore hold firmly to the principle of education based on the Torah*, rejecting any arrangement. It is only in this way that one can hope to save the young generation, and also those of middle age or even of mature age.

Moreover, experience in this last generation has established that the young mock those who make compromises. They tell themselves, indeed, that if these men sincerely adhered to the principles they teach, they would not act in this way, particularly with respect to everything concerning the Torah* of Hashem*.

It is quite clear that a man of flesh and blood cannot introduce compromises in what is exclusively the affair of Hashem*.

With my blessing for good health and to give good news, always and every day,

P. S.: I am enclosing the kuntres* published on the occasion of Lag BaOmer*, which is approaching.[4] No doubt you will make it available to as many as possible.
