Igrot Kodesh · Letter 216 — Fundraising appeal for Chabad education and publishing in Australia
Volume 2 · Letter 49
By the grace of Hashem, Shushan Purim* 5706. To the greatly distinguished Chassid*, who fears Hashem, Rav Moshe Zalman Feyglin*, Spartown, Victoria, Australia. I greet you and bless you,
I have duly received your letter of February 19th. We were very pleased with your donation, for the needs here are very great. We have twenty-five girls' schools — Beth Rivkah* and Beth Sarah*. In addition, our budget devoted to publications is very significant, and financial difficulties prevent us from printing a larger number of books.
Large shipments are sent to Europe and other countries. The Merkaz L'Inyonei Chinuch*, the Machaneh Yisrael*, and the Kehot* publishing house work in close collaboration. Naturally, every form of assistance is of great importance to us.
Our Sages define the Mitzvot* of Purim*. The tractate Megilla* 7a states that one gives two food portions to a friend and two gifts to two poor persons.
One may develop on this subject an explanation based on Chassidut*. It is known that on Purim* both the body and the soul were saved together, whereas on Chanukah*, the exile manifested only in the spiritual dimension. On Purim, the Jews gave their lives to sanctify Hashem's* Name, to cleave to Him, with a determination transcending reason. Indeed, had they apostatized, nothing would have happened to them, since Haman's* decree applied solely to Jews. The Chassidic* discourses of Purim explain all this at length.
Now, the purpose of self-sacrifice is to transform daily existence — to ensure that the body and the animal soul* are mastered by the divine soul*. And the intellectual soul* is the intermediary between these two souls, as my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*, explained in a discourse he delivered in 5690, when he visited the United States for the first time.
But the notions of poverty and wealth are understood primarily in the moral dimension. The intellectual soul and, a fortiori, the divine soul cannot therefore, strictly speaking, be called "poor." This designation applies, however, to the body and the animal soul.
This is why the Jews, after having offered their own lives, received Mitzvot signifying that this sacrifice was to enable the divine soul to direct the animal soul and the body — that is, to give gifts to two poor persons. As for the gifts given to friends, they concern the intellectual soul, "friend" of the divine soul, which can thus play the role of intermediary toward the other soul.
And indeed two gifts must be given to it, for a reasoning cannot be structured and reach a conclusion unless it integrates from the outset two opposing concepts — kindness and severity, a question and an answer. Such is the normal intellectual process, as various texts establish.
The distinctions just noted in the human personality also exist among people. Some are drawn solely to material pleasures. Others feel a natural sentiment toward their fellow human beings, or at least toward those close to them. Some take the time to ask themselves how they ought to act — what conduct their intellect dictates to them. They remain, nonetheless, limited by human logic, and for now do not wish to know that of the Torah* and the Divine.
Each person, according to his abilities, therefore receives a sacred mission: to lead all those just mentioned toward the truth of Torah and Mitzvot. For this, as has been said, one must give gifts to one's friends and donations to the poor — to the greatest number.
Such is the great merit that is yours. In your remote land, where at present, by your account, so few Torah-observant Jews are to be found, you must be the one who spreads and strengthens Torah and Judaism — through the example you set, through your words, and through the various books, pamphlets, booklets, and discourses that will enable you to carry the light of Torah. The merit of the many depends upon you.
I am confident that you will direct your efforts, to which I alluded previously, in this direction, with redoubled energy and with the help of the members of your family. I conclude by wishing you a kosher* and joyous Pesach* festival.
With my blessing for immediate Teshuvah*, immediate redemption. Rav Menachem Schneerson*, Director of the Executive Committee.
