Greetings and blessings,

In recent days I have received the annual pamphlet entitled "Young Israel," with the president's report[2]. You are no doubt the source of this mailing, and I thank you for having thought of it.

Furthermore, I have noted with satisfaction, in various passages, the positions of "Young Israel" in matters of religion, for example, in our Holy Land, with regard to the education and conscription of girls, or in our country[3], regarding the necessity of distinguishing oneself from the "Conservatives"[4]. Indeed, the lack of clarity in the distinctions that must be made in this matter is even more harmful than the opposition manifested by that movement.

Certainly, given the gravity of the subjects addressed, the position of "Young Israel" should have been even stronger and more pronounced, especially since the present state of mind permits one to rectify what must be rectified and to express words that can be accepted. Moreover, American youth quite naturally equate compromise with deception[5].

I therefore have good hope that your positions will be expressed with the determination and ardor required, and that your activities will be carried out with all the necessary enthusiasm.

I permit myself also to make a brief remark. For lack of time, I leafed through this pamphlet quickly. Now, it is certainly necessary to draw up the balance sheet of all your accomplishments of the past year. It is in this way that one can find the courage to continue one's work. But one must also strive that the satisfaction stemming therefrom not lead to the thought, or even the saying, that one has already obtained a sufficient result, that one should be content with what has been achieved.

In making the count of all the qualities, one must also bring forward what was not done, what was lacking in the accomplishments, for the deeds of men cannot be perfect.

From what is clearly expressed, and even more from what is said between the lines, I deduce that the maintenance of such a conception, in the spirit of Torah and Tradition, in various important domains, depends to a large extent on your person. And I had the pleasure of noting, in various passages of this report, that the leadership of "Young Israel"[6] is fully aware of this. And no one is frightened by it; quite the contrary.

I take this opportunity to express my gratitude for your gift, a copy of the first edition of the Likkutei Torah Devarim, although I have already done so through the rav, distinguished chassid who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Ch. M. A. Chodakov[7].

A new, enlarged edition of the Sefer HaMitzvos* of the Tzemach Tzedek* has just appeared. At my request, a copy has been sent to you, by separate parcel. Without doubt, the texts it contains will be useful to you for your discourses and articles.

שלום וברכה!

ימים אלה קבלתי חוברת השנתית של "ישראל הצעיר" עם דו"ח הנשיא, ובטח נשלחה על פי הצעת כת"ר, ות"ח עבור שימת לבבו בזה. גם נהניתי לראות במקומות אחדים בהנוגע לעמדת "ישראל הצעיר" לעניני דת, כגון בארצנו הק' ת"ו בנוגע לחינוך בכלל וגיוס הבנות, ובמדינתנו בנוגע חיוב ההבדלות מהקאנסערוואטיווים, אשר טשטוש הגבולים בזה עוד גרוע מההיזק המובא על ידי התנגדותם גרידא. והגם אשר בשים לב לרציניות הענינים היתה עמדת "ישראל הצעיר" צריכה להיות מודגשה עוד יותר ובחריפות יותר, ובפרט אשר לפי מצב הרוחות כעת שעת הכושר היא להשמיע דברים כבושים ומוכנים לקבלם, ועוד זאת אשר הנוער האמרקאי טבעו להביט על פשרה כעל ענין של "בלאף" לגמרי, הנה תקותי אשר למעשה לא תחסר עמדתם התקיפות והחריפות הדרושה ופעולותיהם בזה תהיינה במרץ המתאים.

עוד ארשה לי להעיר בקצרה, הגם אשר עברתי על החוברת במהירות מפני קוצר הזמן, והוא, אשר עד כמה שדרוש להביא בחשבון ההישגים שהשיגו במשך עבודתם בשנה העברה, שזה משמש עידוד רוח להמשך העבודה, אבל לאידך גיסא, יש להיזהר שלא תביא השביעת רצון לאמירה בלב ואולי גם בפה, כבר עשיתי דיי, ואשמח בחלקי, ובבת אחת עם מנין המעלות יש גם להגיב על מה שעדין לא נעשה ועל החסרונות שבעבודה (שכל מעשה בני אדם הרי הם חסרים השלימות).

רואה אני מהכתוב בפירוש ועוד יותר מבין השטין, אשר חלק גדול לכת"ר בהשמירה על הגישה המתאימה, ברוח התורה והמסורה, לכמה בעיות חשובות, ונעם לי לראות בכמה מקומות מהדו"ח שגם הנהלת היאנג איזראעל מכירה בזה, ולא לבד שאין זה 'מפחיד' אותם, אלא אדרבה...

בהזדמנות זו הנני להביע תודתי, נוסף על מה שמסרתי על ידי הרה"ח וו"ח אי"א נו"מ עוסק בצ"צ וכו' מוהרחמ"א שי' חדקוב, על תשורתו - ספר לקוטי תורה מספר דברים, הוצאה הראשונה. וכיון שזה עתה יצא לאור ספר המצות להצמח צדק בהוצאה חדשה עם הוספות, הנה על פי בקשתי נשלח לכת"ר בחבילה בפ"ע, ובלי ספק אשר יוכל להשתמש במאמרים שבספר זה ותכנם בדרשותיו ומאמריו הוא.
