Igrot Kodesh · Letter 219 — Textual precision in the Tanya regarding 'HaAdam' in Pirkei Avot
Volume 2 · Letter 52
[Winter 5706[1]] The present issue is dedicated to the 19th of Kislev*, the date of the liberation of the Admor HaZaken*. I will therefore respond here to several questions that were posed to me concerning the Tanya*.
Question: The Tanya*, at the beginning of chapter 30, reproduces the following explanation of our Sages — "Be humble before every man" — a quotation from tractate Avot* 4:10. Yet this text uses the word Adam* to designate man, whereas the Tanya says HaAdam*, with a definite article.
Answer: In all the editions of the Tanya I have been able to see, it is written HaAdam, with a Heh[2]. There is therefore no printing error here.
In our Mishnah*, which belongs to tractate Avot, some versions retain the word Adam, without a Heh, while others say HaAdam[3]. The Tanya adopts the latter version — and I speak specifically of the Tanya, for in other texts the Admor HaZaken mentions Adam without a Heh, as we shall cite below. The same is true of tractate Avot as it appears in the Siddur*[4].
Every word of the Tanya is particularly precise. Every additional or omitted letter carries meaning[5]. Admittedly, we are dealing here with a modification that appears insignificant — for is the presence or absence of this Heh really determinative? Yet a brief reflection leads to the conclusion that this single letter completely transforms the understanding of this passage. This is why the Admor HaZaken had to write HaAdam here, with a Heh, whereas elsewhere he retains Adam, without a Heh.
The explanation is as follows. There are two ways of being "humble before each person":
A) Our Sages teach: "Do not judge your fellow until you have reached his place." Indeed, the place in which he finds himself may lead him to act wrongly. He may himself be, by nature, strongly drawn to the pleasures of the world. His evil inclination* therefore wages a battle of terrible intensity against him. Each person must therefore ask himself whether he truly serves Hashem to the measure of that struggle, as the Tanya explains at length in chapter 30.
B) It is through others that one can attain one's own perfection. The image of the human body will illustrate this. The head is its highest point and the feet its lowest. Yet the feet are necessary for walking. They support upright the body and the head. Moreover, bloodletting in the foot can relieve a migraine, even though the foot itself derives its vitality from the head. The Likkutei Torah* explains this at length in Parshat Nitzavim*.
These two conceptions differ in two respects:
The first provokes humility, sadness, and bitterness. Nevertheless, it is necessary[6], and our Sages say that one must "rouse one's good inclination against the evil inclination" — provided that it succeeds in overcoming it, "turns away from evil and does good." This is what the Tanya explains in chapter 31.
Furthermore, such reflection produces humility not only toward Jews, but also toward non-Jews — in the manner, for example, of Dama ben Netina*, when he honored his father, as recounted in tractate Kiddushin* 31a.
The second conception leads to humility, but not to sadness. Moreover, it governs one's relationship with one's fellow Jew, for all the children of Israel constitute one single great body, each member of which needs all the others. It has, however, no relevance in relation to a non-Jew.
Now, our Sages specify that "you are called Adam*" — in distinction from non-Jews. By contrast, non-Jews may be called HaAdam*, according to tractate Yevamot* 61a and the Tosafot*.
Thus, when melancholy prevents a person from struggling against his evil inclination[7] — which must then be pushed back and humiliated, when one must convince oneself that it is inferior even to impure animals — it is necessary to employ the first approach: that is, to express humility even before a non-Jew. It is to highlight this idea that the Admor HaZaken says HaAdam, with a Heh.
By contrast, when the object is to express love for a fellow Jew, such reflection has no place. One must then meditate on the fact that all Jews constitute one single body, that each can contribute to the perfection of the others. The Admor HaZaken then says Adam, without a Heh. One may consult on this matter Iggeret HaKodesh*, end of chapter 22, Likkutei Torah*, beginning of Parshat Nitzavim, and the Siddur*, at the gate of Elul*[8].
The same is true of the divine service* of the righteous and, more generally, of the highest form of that service — transcending the mere avoidance of evil. There too, meditating on the baseness of the evil inclination is of no use. On the contrary, one must tell oneself that one's fellow is on a higher level than oneself, and that one should be animated by the desire to equal him. In this regard one may indeed employ the word Adam, without a Heh. See on this subject Torah Or*, in the Sidrot* Toldot and Miketz, and Likkutei Torah concerning Shemini Atzeret*.
It follows that the essential version of this Mishnah is Adam, without a Heh. This is therefore the one the Admor HaZaken cites in his Siddur.
Indeed, this Mishnah, in its plain meaning, speaks primarily of Torah study. It calls for humility before each person — that one should learn from all — or alternatively, that one preserve one's humility even if one is a Torah scholar, which obviously applies only in relation to fellow Jews.

If all that has just been said can be inferred from a single letter of the Tanya, how many teachings can be discovered in a word, a sentence, a paragraph, or still more, a chapter!
