Greetings and blessings,

I am writing to you to say that allowing the talmidim* to go home for the entire month of Tishrei* runs counter to logic and to a chinuch* based on the fear of Hashem. For if such a chinuch is necessary all year round, there is nevertheless no better moment, no time more propitious for realizing it than this period of Selichos*, in these Yamim Nora'im*.

If it is not possible to modify this practice, one must, at the very least, provide moral support to these talmidim, both for themselves and for the places to which they go. If the older among them can be retained at the yeshivah at least for Rosh Hashanah*, the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah*, and Yom HaKadosh*, this period must be used to draw them close to chassidic customs and practices.

Of course, one must not modify the positive practices they have observed for several generations. Yet one must make known to them certain Chabad customs, so that they may adopt them, without however putting in question those of the Sefardim*.

...כותב הנני... אליו אשר זה שהתלמידים נוסעים לביתם על כל משך חדש תשרי, הנה הנהגה זו היפך השכל והיפך הכוונה בהדרכה ביראת שמים, כי אם נחוצה היא בכל השנה הרי אין לך שעת הכושר ועת רצון ע"ז כבימי הסליחות ימים נוראים וכו', ואם אין לשנות הנהגה זו, צריך עכ"פ לזיינם בצידה רוחנית הן בשביל עצמם והן בשביל המקומות לשם נוסעים, ואם יש לעכב עכ"פ הגדולים שבהם בהישיבה עכ"פ לר"ה עשי"ת ויום הקדוש יש לנצל זמן זה כדי לקרבם למנהגי החסידים והדרכותי', ואף שאין לנגוע במנהגיהם הם הטובים שקבלו מדור דור, בכ"ז יש מנהגי חב"ד שצריכים להודיעם ע"מ שינהגו כן מבלי לנגוע במנהג הספרדים.
