You conclude your letter by asking me not to be affected by the fact that your son did not go on a mission for the Merkaz L'Inyonei Chinuch*. Of course, I am not affected by it. Nevertheless, I am pained by it.

In appearance, these missions are entrusted by the Merkaz L'Inyonei Chinuch. But in reality, they are an integral part of the formation of these young men and are highly profitable to them, from various points of view.

In my view, given the personality of your son, this mission could have been even more salutary for him than for other talmidim* of the yeshivah — not only because one who belongs to this institution must not distinguish himself from all the others, but also and above all because such a journey, such a mission, has a considerable contribution to make. However, it is useless to complain about what is past.

...מה שמסיים במכתבו שלא אקפיד על מה שבנו... שי' לא נסע בשליחות המל"ח, הנה איני מקפיד ע"ז אלא מצטער, כי נסיעות אלו אף שב"חיצוניות" אומרים שזהו מטעם המל"ח אבל לאמיתית הענין הוא חלק מתכנית חינוך האברכים ומביא להם תועלת מרובה בכמה פרטים, וכפי השקפתי בתכונת נפש בנו הנ"ל התועלת בשבילו היתה בכמה מובנים עוד יותר מאשר לשאר אברכי התמימים ולא רק מטעם שאברך ישיבה אין צריך להתנהג באופן אחר משאר חבריו אלא והוא העיקר כי נסיעה כזו בשליחות היתה נותנת לו הרבה, אבל אין צועקין על העבר.
