Question: Is there a source in the revealed Torah* for what the Tanya* says in chapter 7 of Iggeret HaTeshuvah* — that an accumulation of minor sins has the same effect as a sin punishable by kareth* or death?
Answer: Yes — in the Shulchan Aruch*: [1] "If a dangerously ill patient needs meat, shechitah* is performed for him on Shabbat* and he is not fed non-kosher meat." For eating less than thirty grams of non-kosher meat would not be a simple transgression, while performing shechitah* on Shabbat* is punishable by stoning. Yet shechitah* is permitted, because the capital sin is committed only once, whereas eating non-kosher is a new transgression with each bite, even if each individual transgression is less severe. According to some opinions, this applies also to a minor rabbinic prohibition.
See also Lekach Tov* [2] by Rav Y. Engel, principle 15, which asks whether quantitative multiplication outweighs qualitative severity. [3] He cites Rashi* on Yevamot* 32b and Tosafot* on Sanhedrin* 50a. [4]
Note [5]: He raises this question at principle 20 — if accepted, one would have to be killed rather than transgress any prohibition that must be performed multiple times, just as one must be killed rather than commit murder, idolatry, or immorality even once. But there is no difficulty here, since the Alter Rebbe* explains in Tanya* chapter 24 that the obligation to give one's life is not linked to the severity of the sin itself.
