Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter, in which you inform me that your birthday will be next 2 Elul.

You surely know the practices of the birthday — namely, the necessity of being called up to the Torah, of giving tzedakah* before the tefillos* of Shacharis* and Minchah*, of studying a chassidic maamar* in order to repeat it publicly, at least in part, on the next occasion, and of reciting Tehillim*.

May Hashem grant you success, so that you may be a chassid, fearing Hashem and learned in Torah.

N.B.: You ask me about the tefillin* of Rabbeinu Tam*[1]. Everything depends, in fact, on the quantity and the quality of your knowledge of Chassidus*[2]. You will ask your spiritual guide to write to me on this subject. No doubt you also observe the immersion instituted by Ezra*[3].

במענה על מכתבו בו מודיע מיום ההולדת שלו ביום ב' אלול הבע"ל.

הנה בטח ידוע לו מסדרי יום הולדת, היינו בעלי' לתורה נתינת צדקה קודם שחרית ומנחה לימוד מאמר דא"ח ע"מ לחזור אותו עכ"פ מקצתו בהזדמנות הקרובה ברבים, אמירת תהלים וכו'. והשי"ת יצליחו שיהי' חסיד ירא שמים ולמדן.

נ"ב. בנוגע לשאלתו אודות הנחת תפילין ר"ת, הנה תלוי זה בכמות ואיכות ידיעותיו בתורת הדא"ח, ויבקש את המשפיע שלו שיכתוב לי עד"ז, ובטח נזהר הוא ג"כ בטבילת עזרא.
