and devotes himself to communal needs,

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of 16 Menachem Av. I was pleased to learn that you intend to visit other African countries[2] in which you had not been the previous time. We have spoken together, on various occasions, of the fact that the Lubavitch institutions must develop, like everything that belongs to the domain of holiness. On this depends the success of all undertakings.

As a saying[3] of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit shall protect us, indicates, the present situation is comparable to that of a man climbing a particularly steep mountain. For one who walks on the plain may stop for a few moments to rest. By contrast, one who climbs a mountain will fall back, will slip down to the bottom of it, if he does so.

You will therefore study the possibility of broadening the number of places you visit. This will have a positive effect not only in the material domain, but also spiritually.

It is surely unnecessary to remind you of what we have many times discussed. In the places you visit, you will search, in shuls* or even in private homes, for seforim* that are not in use and that we do not possess here.

If necessary, one may propose to exchange them for the works edited here through our efforts, in particular those accessible to all, such as the collections of sichos*. You will surely invest your efforts in this matter. I leave it to your judgment to determine what is most fitting in each place.

In greeting all the chassidim, in particular the rav, distinguished chassid who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Yirmiyahu[4], with my blessing for success in the collection of material goods and the sowing of spirituality, in the expectation of your good news,

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו מט"ז מנ"א, ונהניתי ממ"ש שבדעתו לבקר עוד מדינות באפריקה מה שלא ביקרם בפעם הקודם אשר דברנו בזה כ"פ שמוכרח הדבר בכל מוסדותינו לקיים פסק רז"ל מעלין בקדש, כי בזה תלוי הצלחת הענינים וכפתגם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע שבימינו אלה הוא ע"ד אחד המטפס ועולה על הר משופע ביותר, שההולך במישור יכול לעמוד לאיזה משך זמן לנוח משא"כ בשפוע ההר הנה כשעומד הרי זה בד"מ נסיגה לאחור און ער גליטש זיך אראפ און אראפ ר"ל, ובטח יחקור על האפשרית להגדיל מספר המקומות שיבקר, שבודאי תהי' בזה תועלת לא רק בגשמיות אלא גם ברוחניות...

בודאי למותר לעוררו אודות מה שדברנו כ"פ שבהמקומות שמבקר יחקור אפשר ישנם בהבתי כנסיות או גם אצל פרטים ספרים שאין להם צורך בהם, וכאן אינם נמצאים, ובמקום שנחוץ יש לומר להם שיכולים להחליפם בהספרים שהדפסנו כאן ובפרט באלו השוים לכל נפש ספרי השיחות וכו', ובטח גם בזה ישתדל עתה, ואל בינתו אשען שידון בכל מקום באופן המתאים.
