Greetings and blessings,

Your letter, informing me that you have arrived safely in the Holy Land, has reached me today. The boat in which you are traveling has already left New York, and I am therefore led to send you this correspondence through my office in Paris[1], in order to inform you that the steamer Jerusalem, on which you intend to embark at Marseille, belongs to a Jewish company, and its crew is Jewish[2]. It is therefore forbidden to travel on it on Shabbos*, or even to be present on it and thereby benefit from the labor[3] performed there.

According to the information at my disposal, this boat will leave Marseille next Thursday or Friday and will not dock at Haifa until after Shabbos. Such a journey is therefore indeed a transgression of Shabbos. If it is not possible for you to take another boat, you can and must continue your journey in another way — by train or airplane to Naples, where you will be able to spend Shabbos, and then, at its conclusion, rejoin the steamer Jerusalem which, according to my information, will leave that city on Sunday.

No doubt you will not content yourself with saving yourself and your wife from the transgression of Shabbos. You will also transmit this message to other persons who fear the Word of Hashem and who could commit this sin for lack of information, chas veshalom*.

מכתבו המודיע אדות נסיעתו צלחה לאה"ק ת"ו, הגיעני היום, ובאשר האני' שנוסע בה עזבה כבר את ניו יארק מוכרחני לשלח מכתב באמצעות האפיס שלי בפאריז כדי למהר ולהעיר לו, כי האני' "ירושלים" אשר מתכונן לנסוע בה ממארסייל היא אני' יהודית והעובדים בה הם יהודים, ויש איסור לנסוע בה בשבת, או גם להמצא בה ביום השבת ולהנות מהמלאכות הנעשות ביום השבת.

ובאשר כפי הידיעות שהגיעוני תעזב האני' הנ"ל את מארסייל ביום ה' או ו' הבע"ל ותגיע לחיפה רק אחר השבת לכן הנסיעה קשורה בחילול שבת, ובאם אין לפניו ברירת נסיעה באני' אחרת עד אה"ק ת"ו, אולי אפשר ומוכרח לו לנסוע באופן אחר, רכבת או אוירון עד נעאפאל לשבת ומשם להמשיך הנסיעה באותה האני' ירושלים, אשר כפי ששמעתי עוזבת היא את נעאפאל (נייפעלס) ביום א'.

ובודאי לא יסתפק במה שיציל את עצמו ואת זוגתו תחי' מחלול שבת, אולי יודיע זה גם לעוד אנשים חרדים לדבר ה', אשר רק משום שחסרה להן הידיעה עלולים הם חלילה לחלול שבת.
