Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 29 Menachem Av, in which you speak of the bad thoughts that disturb you, from time to time, particularly during tefillah*.

You must daven with a siddur*. Even when you need to meditate, you will keep it open before you. As soon as these thoughts assail you, you will fix your gaze upon the siddur. Our Sages say, indeed, that these letters are luminous.

You should also know by heart, with precision, several passages of Chassidus*, in particular the maamar* entitled "Mipnei Seivah Takum" ("You shall rise before the elder"), which is found in Likkutei Torah*, at the end of parshas Kedoshim.

Before tefillah, on weekdays, you will give from time to time a few coins to tzedakah*. Hashem will grant that you serve Him fruitfully, that you study the revealed part of the Torah and Chassidus with success. This does not mean that you must seek grandiose accomplishments. For one serves Hashem from the moment one imposes upon oneself a true effort, as the Tanya* and the chassidic maamarim explain.

במענה על מכתבו מכ"ט מנ"א בו כותב על ענין המחשבות זרות שמבלבלים אותו מזמן לזמן וביותר בזמן התפלה.

והנה עליו להתפלל מתוך הסידור וגם במקום שצריך להתבונן צריך להיות הסידור פתוח לפניו וכשירגיש שמתחילות מחשבות לשוטט יביט בסידור וידוע מרז"ל אותיות מאירות, וצריך שיהי' לו איזה ענינים מתורת החסידות חקוקים בזכרונו בתיבותיהם ומהם הדרוש והדרת פני זקן בלקו"ת סוף פ' קדושים, וכן יתן קודם התפלה בבקר - בימות החול - איזה פרוטות לצדקה מזמן לזמן ויצוה לבדוק התפילין שלו והשי"ת יצליחו בעבודה ובלימוד תורת הנגלה ותורת החסידות ואל ילך בגדולות ובנפלאות וידוע הפי' עובד אלקים שזהו עבודה ויגיעה קשה וכמבואר בתניא ובמאמרי דא"ח.
