To the rav, distinguished chassid who fears Hashem,
Rav Avraham Moshe[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter, in which you tell me that for twenty-five years you have read the Torah, sounded the shofar*, and led Shacharis* on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. This year, these days will fall within the twelve months following the histalkus* of your mother, and you ask me whether, in my view, you should nevertheless lead the tefillos*.

The halachah* on this subject is set forth in various texts. One who has been leading the tefillos for several years on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur must continue to do so[2]. Consult the commentators on the Shulchan Aruch*, the Aruch HaShulchan*, paragraphs 46 and 47, as well as other references, such as the Mateh Ephraim* and its commentators, chapter 581.

Even more, you yourself indicate in your letter that my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit shall protect us, told you to do the same upon the histalkus of your father.

You no doubt know the instruction given by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, for those who lead the tefillos on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. They must, during the days preceding these festivals, review the meaning, at least the simplest one, of the words they pronounce — whether of the tefillah proper or of the piyutim* added to it.

With my blessing that you be inscribed and sealed for a good year, that you be a good chazzan* for those who delegate you, enabling them to obtain a good and sweet year, in the midst of all our brethren, the Bnei Yisrael*,

במענה על מכתבו בו כותב אשר זה כעשרים וחמש שנה שהנהו בעל קורא בעל תוקע וש"ץ לשחרית בר"ה ויוהכ"פ, וכיון אשר בשנה זו זהו בתוך י"ב חדש לפטירת אמו ע"ה, שואל דעתי אם יעבור לפני התיבה.

והנה מבואר הדין בכ"מ בזה, שבהוחזק בזה כמה שנים יש לו לעבור לפני התיבה גם בר"ה ויוהכ"פ ויעיין בנ"כ השו"ע בערוך השלחן ס"ק מו-מז וש"נ. מטה אפרים ונ"כ סימן תקפ"א, ובפרט שכותב במכתבו שכבר הורה בזה כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע להלכה למעשה בימי אבילותו על אביו ע"ה.

בטח ידוע לו מהוראות כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר, להעובר לפני התיבה בר"ה ויוהכ"פ לעבור על פירוש המלות לכה"פ כפשוטו הן של התפלה והן של הפיוטים בימים שלפניהם.

בברכת כוח"ט ואשר יהי' שליח טוב לשולחיו להתברך בשנה טובה ומתוקה בתכאחב"י.
