Igrot Kodesh · Letter 223 — Publishing updates, donor clarification, and outstanding financial debts

By the grace of Hashem*, 3 Nissan 5706.

To the pleasant young man, the erudite Chassid* who fears Hashem*, Rav M. Z., [1] greetings and blessings.

I am replying to your letters of the 7th and 22nd of Adar Sheni*.

I do not possess any copy of the Sefer Midot Rabbi Shimon Ben Yochai*.

Is the amount sent by Karakovski related to his commitment toward the publication of the biography of the Rebbe Maharach* [2] or is it an independent donation? This clarification is also necessary in order to draft the receipt.

The discourses of 18 Elul* and 19 Kislev* of this year are still with my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita*. [3]

The binding of the responsa and commentaries of the Tzemach Tzedek*, as well as of the series of Chassidic* discourses Maim Rabbim* [4] has not yet been completed.

Your debt [5] now exceeds five hundred [6] dollars, and this is in addition to the debts of the Yeshivah* and of Beit Rivka*. I do not know whether you are justified in claiming that you are doing everything within your power to repay it. In any event, you will understand that this discussion changes nothing in the printer's position. It is necessary to pay him in full for the books he has already produced. We can, however, decide to bring our publications to an end.

For a long time now I have been explaining all of this — and I continue to explain it — to people such as yourself. By refraining from paying what you owe, you are not only transgressing the Mitzvah* of repaying a debt. You have caused, and continue to cause, a deficiency and a disruption to the program of work established by my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, in general, and to the printing schedule in particular.

Moreover, you should have endeavored to multiply the possibilities of publishing books, to the full extent permitted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita. Indeed, in such a case, he himself would have expanded those permissions. It is well known that the thirst of the recipient increases the desire of the giver. You should therefore not only have repaid your debts, but also have sought new sources of funding.

Instead, each person advances his own explanation and waits for me to acknowledge the validity of his argument. How many Chassidic* discourses will be printed in this manner?

I hope that what has just been said will have its effect, and if you have truly done everything within your revealed* powers, you will thereby awaken hidden and deep powers. You should, in this regard, consult the Chassidic* discourse delivered on 2 Nissan* of this year and redouble your efforts in all that has been said above.

It is written in Iggeret HaKodesh*, chapter 14, that each year a new divine light is revealed, issuing from a particularly elevated level that has never yet illuminated the world. A person, created in the image of Hashem*, must therefore do likewise and forge the vessels that will allow him to receive such an elevated light.

גליונות מהס' מדות רשב"י אין אצלי.

הסכום ששלח קאראקאווסקי הוא ע"ח מה שהתחייב להדפסת דברי ימי אדמו"ר מהר"ש נ"ע, או זהו נדבה בפ"ע? ונוגע ג"כ לנוסח הקבלה.

שיחות ח"י אלול-י"ט כסלו ש.ז. הם עדיין אצל כ"ק מו"ח אד"ש.

הצ"צ (שו"ת וחי') ומים רבים עדיין לא נגמרו מבית הכורך.

בנוגע להחוב שלו, שעלה כבר יותר מחמש מאות (לבד מהישיבה והבית רבקה) איני יודע אם הצדק אתו שכבר עושה כל מה שביכלתו לעשות בזה, אבל בודאי יאמין שלהמדפיס אין נוגע כלל כל שקו"ט זו. ובעד הספרים שהדפיס כבר צריך לשלם לו במלואו. אלא שיש ברירה בידינו מכאן ולהבא שלא להדפיס יותר.

ואת זה הנני משתדל זה עידן ועידנים להסביר כפול ומשולש לאנשים כמותו, שמה שהם נמנעים מלשלם חוב המגיע מהם אין זה רק חסרון קיום המצוה דפרעון חוב, אלא שזה גרם וגורם לחסרון ואי-מילוי תכנית העבודה שהתווה כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שליט"א בכלל, ולמקצוע ההדפסה בפרט.

בה בשעה שעליהם הי' להשתדל להגדיל אפשריות ההדפסה עד כמה שניתן רשיון מאת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שליט"א (וזה גופא הי' מגדיל ג"כ הרשיון, וכידוע שתשוקת המקבל מגדלת ההשפעה), לא רק ע"י תשלום החובות כ"א ע"י סכומים נוספים ע"ז - ותחת כ"ז הנה כאו"א בא וטענתו בידו, ומקוה אשר בטח אודה בצדקתו. וכמה מאמרי דא"ח יודפסו עי"ז?

תקותי אשר כהנ"ל יעשה פרי. ואם אמת הדבר אשר כבר עשה כל מה שבכח כחותיו הגלוים, יעורר כחות הנעלמים והעצמיים (ראה מאמר ב' ניסן דהאי שתא) ויוסיף אומץ בכהנ"ל.

וי"ל עפמש"נ באגה"ק (סי' יד) שבכל שנה נמשך אור חדש עליון מבחי' עליונה יותר כו' שלא הי' מאיר עדיין מימי עולם. והאדם, שהוא מל' אדמה לעליון ג"כ צ"ל באופן זה, היינו, שצריך לעשות כלים מקבלים לאור זה.
