Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your questions:

A) You tell me that the study of Torah and tefillah* are without effect on you. You will therefore study the Pokeach Ivrim*, which has also been translated into Hebrew. It was written by the Mitteler Rebbe*, son of the Alter Rebbe*, who is the author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*.

The administration of Yeshivah Lubavitch in Brunoy[1] surely possesses a copy of this book, and you will find there various explanations justifying why the body and the nefesh habahamis* are not affected by the study of Torah and by tefillah. It also shows how to remedy such a situation.

Our Sages say that "HaKadosh Baruch Hu* does not act tyrannically with His creatures," and "He demands of them only according to the strengths they possess." You possess a body and a nefesh habahamis. You therefore have, undoubtedly, the strength to master them.

B) You tell me that foreign thoughts disturb you during tefillah. You know that these come from the words and useless thoughts that precede the tefillah. The more you succeed in reducing them, the more these thoughts will disappear.

You will also daven with a siddur*[2]. Moreover, before and after tefillah, you will read a few Tehillim* and you will give a coin to tzedakah*, also before tefillah.

C) You tell me that you suffer from bad thoughts. You must therefore study chassidic maamarim* which, in the end, gladden the heart and elevate the spirit, allowing one to refine oneself, to extricate oneself from the mire.

You may begin this study with the Kuntres Uma'ayan*[3].

D) In a general way, it is not easy to respond, in writing, to such questions. You well understand the value of words of encouragement that are exchanged directly, face to face. You will therefore meet, at the first opportunity, the spiritual guide of Yeshivah Lubavitch in Brunoy, the rav, distinguished chassid who fears Hashem, Rav Nissan Nemanov, and you will show him the present letter. You will ask him to converse with him, so that he advise you in a positive manner, materially and spiritually. And the sooner the better.

N.B.: You ask me whether one can find here kosher tefillin* according to the Sefardic rite. In a general way, there are none. Consequently, you will rather address yourself to our Paris office, which is in contact with the Sefardim of Morocco. By this means, it may perhaps be able to provide you with some.

...ובמענה על שאלותיו.

א) במה שאינו מתרגש מלימודו ומתפלותיו, הנה ילמוד הקונטרס פוקח עורים שנעתק גם כן ללשון הקדש והוא לאדמו"ר האמצעי בנו של כ"ק אדמו"ר הזקן בעל התניא והשולחן ערוך, שבטח נמצא אצל ההנהלה דישיבת תומכי תמימים בברונא ויראה שם כמה סיבות מפני מה גופו ונפשו הבהמית אין מתרגשים מהלימוד והתפלה ובידו לתקנם וכמאמר רז"ל אין הקב"ה בא בטרוניא עם בריותיו ואינו מבקש אלא לפי כחן, וכיון שניתנו לו גוף ונפש הבהמית כזה בודאי ניתנו לו ג"כ הכחות לכבשם.

ב) מה שכותב שמחשבות זרות מבלבלות אותו בשעת התפלה הנה ידוע שמח"ז בעת התפלה באים בסיבת דברים בטלים ומחשבות בטלות קודם התפלה וככל אשר יגדיר את עצמו בזה ימעטו המח"ז בעת התפלה ויתפלל מתוך הסידור וכן יאמר קודם התפלה ולאחרי' איזה קאפיטלעך תהלים ויתן פרוטה לצדקה קודם התפלה.

ג) מ"ש שסובל מהרהורים רעים, הנה עליו ללמוד מאמרי חסידות אשר סוף סוף משמחים את הלב ומרוממים את הנפש ובמילא מגביהים ומוציאים אותו מתוך הרפש ובוץ, ויוכל להתחיל הלימוד בהקונטרס ומעין מבית ה' יוצא.

ד) בכלל קשה לענות בפרטיות על שאלות כאלו בכתב, וכבר ידוע מעלת דברי התעוררות הנשמעים מפה אל פה פנים אל פנים ובמילא יחפש הזדמנות היותר קרובה להתראות עם המשפיע דישיבת תומכי תמימים בברונא הרה"ח הוו"ח אי"א נו"מ מוה"ר ניסן שי' נעמאנאוו, ויראה לו את מכתבי זה ויבקשו שישמע את שיחתו וייעצו בטוב לפניו בגשמיות וברוחניות וככל אשר יקדים בזה ה"ז משובח.
