and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Shlomo Chaim[1],

Greetings and blessings,

In due course, I received with pleasure the letters in which you describe to me the organization[2], before and after Rosh Hashanah*. You did indeed retain the talmidim*[3]. You have invigorated me with this joyous news, showing that one is advancing, step by step, in the preparations for the coming of our righteous Mashiach*.

One must therefore not be affected or saddened because it seems that this advancement is slow and that it has only a reduced scope. In reality, one cannot measure its pace, and it is said, by allusion, at the end of Iggeres HaTeshuvah*, that the displacement of a shadow by a tefach*[4] here below corresponds to a movement of the sun, of several thousand mil[5], in the sky, "and it is even more than that…" You will also see what chapter 26 of the Tanya* says regarding the shadow.

With my blessing for success in your sacred mission, in expectation of good and joyous news regarding the organization of the month of Tishrei, for the chassidim in general and for your disciples in particular,

בנועם ובעתם קבלתי מכתביו בם כותב ע"ד הסדר דלפני ר"ה ואח"כ אשר עכבו התלמידים וכו' והחי' את נפשי בבשורה משמחת זו אשר הולכים צעד אחר צעד בהכנת הענינים שיהיו כלים לביאת משיח צדקנו, ואין להתרשם ולהתפעל ממה שנדמה שההליכה היא לאט לאט מועט מהמדה כי א"א לשער אמיתת ההליכה וע"פ הנרמז בסוף אגרת התשובה שהעתקת הצל בארץ טפח הוא לפי (ובמילא גם גורם) הילוך גלגל השמש ברקיע אלפים מילין וכו' ויתר על כן לאין קץ כו' (ולהעיר מתניא פרק כ"ו בענין הצל).
