To the rav, distinguished chassid who fears Hashem,
devotes himself to communal needs,
and assumes a sacred mission,
Rav Aharon[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of 11 Cheshvan, in which you tell me that you are visiting the villages[2], on behalf of the great rav, distinguished chassid who fears Hashem and faithfully devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Shlomo Matusof[3].

It is difficult to explain the greatness of the merit you acquire in this way. There is a saying[4] of the Baal Shem Tov*, which my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit shall protect us, transmitted many times: "Every Jewish man and every Jewish woman is cherished by the Holy One, blessed be He, infinitely more than an only son by his parents who had him at an advanced age."

You can conclude from this how important it is to bring close the heart of this only son to his Father Who is in heaven, all the more since you describe the physical effort it costs you, since you must ride an animal[5]. The reward is in proportion to the effort[6].

May Hashem grant that you observe, with your eyes of flesh, the fruits of your sacred mission. For that is indeed the greatest reward. The Mishnah* says, in fact, that "the reward of a mitzvah* is the mitzvah itself." You will thus know success in your personal preoccupations.

Our Sages say that one must know elevation in all that concerns the domain of kedushah*. You will therefore redouble your ardor in all these accomplishments and, "to whoever adds[7], one adds[8]," through a heavenly influence, in all your needs, material and spiritual.

בנועם קבלתי מכתבו מי"א חשון, בו כותב אשר מבקר הוא בכפרים בשליחותו של הרה"ג והרה"ח אי"א נו"נ עוסק בצ"צ באמונה כו' וכו' מוה"ר שלמה שי מתוסאף. וגודל הזכות אשר בזה - אין די באר, וידוע פתגם הבעש"ט (אשר שמענוהו כמה פעמים מכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע) שכל אחד ואחת מישראל חביב אצל הקב"ה באין ערוך יותר מחביבות של בן יחיד אצל הורים שנולד להם לעת זקנתם, ומעתה יש לשער מה גדול הזכות כשמקרב את לבו של בן יחיד זה לאביו שבשמים, וביחוד שהוא כותב שקשור זה ג"כ עם טרחה גופנית כי צריך לרכוב על הבהמה וכו' הנה לפום צערא אגרא.

ויהי רצון מהשי"ת שיראה גם בעיני בשר הצלחה בעבודתו בקדש זו, אשר זהו השכר היותר גדול, וכפסק המשנה שכר מצוה - מצוה, ויומשך זה ג"כ בהצלחה בעניניו הפרטיים, ובודאי כפסק רז"ל מעלין בקדש - יוסיף אומץ בכל הנ"ל וכל המוסיף מוסיפין לו מן השמים בהמצטרך לו בגשמיות וברוחניות.
