in our Eretz HaKodesh*,
may Hashem grant you long life,

Greetings and blessings,

A) After a long silence, I have at last received your letter of 9 Marcheshvan, with what was enclosed. I thank you at least for having written to me now. I hope that you will arrange, in the future, that there be no more such long silences. The mere fact of knowing that one will have to give an account permits one to intensify what is accomplished.

B) In a general way, I am satisfied with what was done during the month of Tishrei. Nevertheless, an important point is still missing, which is the following. One must develop, expand, for one must know elevation in all that concerns the domain of kedushah*. Now, if one considers what was being accomplished, you have in no way progressed — quite the contrary.

I understand the reasons that you give me in your letter, as well as those that appear in it by allusion. But you know the saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe[1], according to which all that concerns only the angel Michael, charged with writing down the merits of Yisrael and defending it.

When there is a compelling reason, one cannot complain. However, as for ourselves, we know the saying of the Tzemach Tzedek*[2] according to which "we are workers of the day." Our role is to illuminate, and by failing to do so, one loses the spark emanating from the luminary, and sometimes even the luminary itself, in this place or that. For people such as you, it is surely unnecessary to say more.

C) I am surprised that you do not mention the publication of the next Bitaon[3]. Indeed, the previous ones made a good impression. These collections must therefore be maintained, on the occasion of the festivals or of the special days of the Chabad calendar, particularly during the month of Kislev.

May Hashem grant you success.

D) It seems to me that I have already emphasized to you the importance of introducing yourselves into the circles of orthodox youth and, of course, first of all into the yeshivos*. You will also conduct an action with those who, for the moment, are not yet observant, the first priority in this domain being the soldiers.

With the appropriate effort, you will find the means of entering into contact with them.

Awaiting your good news, I conclude by addressing to you my wishes for success in your sacred mission, and indeed for considerable success.

אחרי הדומי' הארוכה נתקבל סו"ס מכתבם מט' מ"ח עם המצורפים אליו, ות"ח עכ"פ על כתיבתם עתה, ותקותי אשר להבא יסדרו שלא יהי' הפסקים ארוכים כ"כ, אשר זה גופא שידעו שצריכים לכתוב עד"ז יוסיף בהעבודה.

ב) אף שבכלל נהניתי מהפעולות דחדש תשרי, אבל ענין חשוב חסר בהם והוא התנועה של התפשטות והתרחבות שהרי צ"ל מעלין בקדש ולגבי פעולותיהם מאז הנה לא לבד שלא נתגדלו אלא אדרבה. מבין הנני את הטעמים בהם הנזכרים הנרמזים במכתבם ג"כ אבל הרי ידוע פתגם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שזהו נוגע למלאך מיכאל הרושם זכיותיהם שלישראל ומלמד זכות עליהם, וכשיש טעם חשוב הרי אין מקום לקובלנא, אבל בהנוגע לעצמנו ידוע פתגם הצמח צדק אנן פעלי דיממא אנן אויף צו מאכען ליכטיק, וכשחסרה הפעולה חסרה ג"כ ההארה מהמאור ולפעמים גם המאור במקום פלוני ופלוני והאריכות לדכוותייהו בודאי אך למותר.

ג) לפלא שאין מזכירים במכ' אודות הופעת חוברת הבטאון הבאה שכיון שהקודמים עשו רושם טוב בטח ימשיכו בזה בקשר ליומא דפגרא ומועדי חב"ד ובפרט דחדש כסלו, והשי"ת יצליחם.

ד) כמדומה שכבר עוררתים ע"ד הנחיצות בהתענינות מיוחדת לחדור לחוגי הנוער החרדי (ומובן שחוגי הישיבות עיקר בזה) ואפילו לחוגי הנוער שלע"ע אינם חרדים ובזה הנה אנשי הצבא ג"כ חלק עיקרי ובהתענינות המתאימה ימצאו הדרכים גם לזה.

המחכה לבשו"ט וחותם בברכת הצלחה בעבודתם בקדש והצלחה מופלגה בדוקא.
