Greetings and blessings,

I have just received your letter of Wednesday of Parshas Chayei Sarah, in which you tell me that the surgical operation necessary for your fracture has been set for next Friday.

As I said in the telegram I sent you, I would like to reiterate to you my blessing so that this operation may take place at a good and fruitful moment. Very quickly, you will recover your health and find again your work, which permits you to come to the aid of the children of Yisrael, in the material domain and, in the end, also in a spiritual manner.

Indeed, the children of Yisrael are "a kingdom of priests and a holy nation." Their material preoccupations are therefore holy unto Hashem. According to the well-known saying of the Baal Shem Tov*[1], a neshamah* may enter into a physical body for seventy years or even, if particular strengths are granted to it, for eighty years, solely in order to render a service, one time, to one's fellow, materially or spiritually.

I read with pleasure that your daughter has married well. Certainly, you tell me that it is not easy to influence her husband regarding everything that concerns Torah and the mitzvos*. Nevertheless, the result is in proportion to the effort, and what does it matter if Hashem has decided to grant you a generous reward[2]? Quite the contrary, this should make you redouble your ardor in this matter. For if parents must come to the aid of their children in their material needs, how much more must they do so spiritually.

You know that everything man obtains is, in reality, a loan that the Creator of the world grants him. To repay it, this man must organize his life and his actions in such a way that he causes pleasure to the One Who grants the loan. Now, his existence is physical, and he was fashioned out of earth. He may therefore stumble, repay this loan with delay. Nevertheless, the assurance has been given that nothing resists ratzon* and teshuvah*.

Moreover, the Holy One, blessed be He, acts "middah keneged middah"[3]. When the one who lends does not pressure those who are its beneficiaries, when he agrees to grant them an additional delay — even more, does so with kindness, telling them an agreeable word — he obtains that the supreme Lender, the Holy One, blessed be He, adopts toward him the same attitude.

I await your good news. You will inform me, after the operation, that you are doing well and that you are returning to your work, in the manner just described. May Hashem grant that you also give good news of your son-in-law, your daughter, and your wife.

זה עתה נתקבל מכתבו מד' חיי, בו כותב אשר קבע זמן נתוח השבר ליום ו' הבע"ל.

נוסף על המברק ששלחתי לו, הנני בזה לכפול ברכתי שיהי' הנתוח בשעה טובה ומוצלחת ובקרוב יחזור לאיתנו ולעבודתו בעזר לבני ישראל עזר בגשמיות אשר בודאי הנה סו"ס זה ג"כ עזר ברוחניות. נוסף ע"ז שגם גשמיות בני ישראל שהם ממלכת כהנים וגוי קדוש גם היא קדושה היא לאלקינו, וכידוע פתגם הבעל שם טוב שנשמה יורדת בגוף למשך שבעים שנה ואם בגבורות שמונים שנה כדי לעשות אפילו טובה אחת לישראל בגשמיות או ברוחניות.

נעם לי לקרות במכתבו אשר בעתו השיא את בתו לבחור טוב, ואף שכותב שלא בקל הוא להשפיע עליו בעניני תורה ומצות הנה לפום צערא אגרא ומה איכפת לי' אם הקב"ה רוצה ליתן לו שכר רב וזה אדרבה צריך להוסיף בו אומץ בענין הנ"ל ובמכש"כ מהשתדלות הורים לעזור לב"ב שי' בגשמיות...

ידוע אשר כל הענינים שמקבל האדם הוא בתורת הלוואה מבורא העולם

והתשלומין בזה הם ע"י שהאדם מסדר חייו ופעולותיו באופן שגורמים נחת רוח להמלוה, וכיון שהאדם הוא קרוץ מחומר ויסודו מעפר הרי עלול לכשלון ולאיחור בתשלומין אבל הובטח שאין לך דבר שעומד בפני הרצון והתשובה מדתו של הקב"ה מדה כנגד מדה אשר כשהאדם בהלואותיו שלו איננו מעיק להלווים ולא רק שנותן להם הארכה אלא שהדבר נעשה בספ"י ובפיוס, הרי זה משפיע על המלוה הגדול הוא הקב"ה שגם הנהגתו הוא באופן כזה.

ואחכה לבשו"ט אשר אחרי הנתוח כבר הולך מצבו בטוב וחוזר לעבודתו ובכיוון הנ"ל והשי"ת יזכהו לבשר טובות ג"כ מחתנו בתו וזוגתו שיחיו.
