Igrot Kodesh · Letter 228 — Collecting and preserving the Previous Rebbe's manuscripts and letters

By the grace of Hashem, 6 Iyar* 5706, To the great Rav*, scholar and Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav Y.[1], I greet and bless you,
From time to time I inquire after your welfare and what has befallen you, especially during the many years of these events[2]. I was pleased to learn, from what was reported to me, that you have settled in the community of Bnei Brak* and are relatively satisfied there.
You are no doubt aware of what has recently been printed here, in particular by the Otzar HaChassidim* publishing house. For some time now, I have been collecting the discourses and letters of the Rebbe*[3], for not all of his manuscripts and letters have been preserved. I avoid raising this subject and questioning my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*, directly, so as not to cause him pain[4].
I therefore turn to you, as you no doubt possess a copy of many letters of the Rebbe*[3], or perhaps even of discourses that do not appear in the booklets we have printed. Would you be so kind as to send me a copy? For someone such as yourself, it is of course unnecessary to describe the importance of such a thing and the satisfaction it will bring. Naturally, all costs that arise from this will be at my expense, and I thank you in advance.
You will find enclosed an index of the discourses of the Rebbe*[3] that we have printed, and the books are being sent to you separately.
If you possess a copy of his will, I would be particularly interested to examine it, as well as his letter on the importance of the Holy Tongue* and of speaking it. If you know of a Chassid* who possesses such documents, please let me know, so that I may address myself to him.
I am hopeful that you will agree to participate in all of this. I await your prompt response, hoping that it will reach me before you have even received the Sefer HaSichot*.
Please convey my regards to all members of your family, though I do not know them.

שלום וברכה!

מזמן לזמן הייתי שואל ודורש אודותיו ועל כל הנעשה אתו, ובפרט בשנים רבות המאורעות האלו. ושמחתי, אשר כפי שספרו לי, נסתדר בקהלת בני ברק באופן שהוא שבע רצון במדה ידועה.

בטח נודע לו מאשר נדפס פה במשך זמן האחרון, ובפרט בספרי' אוצר החסידים.

והנה זה איזה זמן אשר הנני מקבץ שיחות ומכ' כ"ק אדמו"ר נ"ע (כי לא הכל נשמר מגכתי"ק אדנ"ע ממכתביו. והנני נזהר מלדבר עד"ז ולשאל בפרטיות אצל כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שליט"א, מפני העג"נ שבדבר).

ובזה הנני פונה אליו, באשר בטח יש תח"י העתק מכמה מכ' כ"ק אדנ"ע, ואולי גם שיחות שלא נכנסו בקובץ שיחות שהדפסנו, אולי יואיל בטובו לשלח לי העתק מהם.

גודל הענין וגודל הת"ח בודאי אין נצרך להאריך לדכוותי'. ומובן אשר כל ההוצאות הכרוכות בזה עלי הם, בצירוף ת"ח מראש.

- מפתח שיחות כ"ק אדנ"ע שהדפסנו מוסג"פ, והס' נשלח בחבילה בפ"ע. -

בפרט מעונין אני אולי יש תח"י העתק מהצואה. כן המכתב ע"ד קדושת לה"ק והדיבור בו. - כן אולי יודע הוא מי מאנ"ש נמצא אצלו מהנ"ל ואכתוב גם לו.

אקוה כי ירצה להשתתף ולעזור בעבודה הנ"ל ואחכה למענה ממנו בזה בהקדם, ומבלי לחכות לקבלת ס' השיחות.
