To the rav, distinguished chassid who fears Hashem
and devotes himself to communal needs,

Greetings and blessings,

A) I received with pleasure your letter, which was not dated. You tell me in what manner you teach in the various classes. Hashem will permit you to instill in your talmidim* the Torah of the living Hashem and a spirit of pure yiras Hashem*.

B) You ask me whether you should attend the bar mitzvah of one of your talmidim[2]. You do not specify where it will be celebrated. If it takes place in a shul where it is forbidden to daven*[3] and unfolds during davening, according to the custom of this country, thereby implying an aliyah to the Torah, your participation indeed raises several difficulties. It is therefore good to abstain, so that your presence not be interpreted as an endorsement.

Indeed, if you yourself go to such a place, all the more can someone else do so, and even daven there.

Conversely, if the bar mitzvah is celebrated in another place and not at the moment of davening, you will surely be able to find a means of participating, without endorsing the forbidden practices.

With my blessing for success in your communal and personal preoccupations, awaiting your good news,

N.B.: I enclose for you the receipts of the checks you sent, as well as a copy of my letter, addressed to all, on the occasion of the festival of liberation of Yud-Tes Kislev[4], the content of which is, in fact, valid all year long. You will surely spread its content to the persons who may be concerned.

נעם לי לקבל מכתבו - בלי הוראת זמן הכתיבה - בו כותב אודות הסדר שלו בלימודו עם כתות השונות והשי"ת יצליחו להחדיר בתלמידיו תורת אלקים חיים ורוח של יראת שמים טהורה.

ב) בשאלתו אם ילך להבר מצוה של אחד מתלמידיו, הנה אינו כותב איפוא תהי' הבר מצוה, כי אם תהי' בבית הכנסת שאסור להתפלל שם וכמנהג המדינה יערכו הבר מצוה בעת התפלה ביחד עם עליות כו' שיש בזה כו"כ שאלות, אין כדאי להשתתף בזה בכדי שלא יחשב זה כהכשר שכיון שבא הוא, הרי האחד עאכו"כ שיוכל לבוא לשם וגם להתפלל כו' וכו'. אבל אם הבר מצוה נערכת במקום אחר ולא בשעת התפלה, בטח יש למצוא ופן שיוכל להשתתף ושלא יהי' בזה ענין של הכשר לדברים אסורים.
