To the rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav David Nathan [1],

Greetings and blessings,

I was pleased to receive the candles used to kindle the lights of Chanukah* [2]. You surely know the saying of the Tzemach Tzedek* [3] on the pasuk*: "He called the sun (shemesh) and the light shone." He says: "Do not read shemesh, but shamash." Indeed, the sun and the moon are also called heavenly servants.

May Hashem grant that we too may be able to illuminate our surroundings, each according to his possibilities, with true generosity of spirit.

And may the mitzvah* of these eight days [4] lead us very soon to the revelation of the most illustrious of the eight shepherds of Yisrael* [5], that is, our righteous Moshiach*, as well as to the appearance of the harp of eight strings.

With my berachah* for success in your sacred mission of illuminating,

N.B.: I duly received your gift, the sefer* Sova Semachos, and I thank you very much for it.

As is my custom each year, basing myself on a statement of the Zohar* [6] according to which one cannot perform a mitzvah* gratuitously, I enclose a check [7]. You will use it in good health.

שלום וברכה!

בנועם קבלתי הנרות שמשמשים לחנוכה, ובטח ידוע לו פתגם אדמו"ר הצ"צ קרא לשמש ויזרח אור א"ת שמש אלא שמש, והרי גם השמש והירח נק' שמשים שבמרום.

ויה"ר מהשי"ת שיקויים גם בנו להזריח אור בסביבתנו כאו"א לפי יכולתו ומתוך הרחבת הדעת אמיתית.

ומצות שמונת ימים אלו יגיענו בקרוב ממש לביאת אחד המיוחד משמונת הרועים שהוא משיח צדקנו ולהגילוי הכנור של שמונת הנימין.

בברכת הצלחה בעבודתו בקדש להזריח אור.
