To the rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem
and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Yehoshua Schneur Zalman [1],

Greetings and blessings,

You inquire of me concerning the building of the yeshivah* [2] and you ask me whether one should be content, at first, with an edifice of limited dimensions, or whether it is fitting to seek from the outset a large and spacious construction.

You know the saying of the Rebbe Maharash* [3], which has been transmitted to us by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, according to which: "It is generally held that if one cannot pass under the obstacle, one will pass over it. I say, for my part, that one must pass over it from the outset (lechatchilah ariber)."

Another teaching that has been transmitted to us says that the entirety of a process is conditioned by its beginning. I am convinced that with the proper effort, you will know success in this matter as well.

With my berachah* for success in all this, which will also grant you immense success in your personal concerns, as well as in those of the members of your family,

...בנוגע לשאלתו בענין הבנין לישיבה אם להסתפק לזמן הראשון בבנין פחות או להשתדל ברכישת בנין גדול ומהודר, הנה ידוע פתגם כ"ק אדמו"ר מוהר"ש ששמענו כ"פ מכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, די וועלט זאגט אז מען קען ניט ארונטער גייט מען אריבער און איך זאג אז מען דארף לכתחלה גיין אריבער, און אויך האבען מיר געהערט א הרואה שני', אז ווי מען שטעלט זיך אוועק אזוי גייט דאס, ומובטחני שאם רק ישתדלו בזה באופן המתאים בודאי תהי' הצלחה גם בזה.

בברכת הצלחה בכל הנ"ל שבמילא תומשך הצלחה מרובה בענינים הפרטים שלו וכל ב"ב שיחיו.
