Greetings and blessings,

I duly received your letter and the request for berachah* enclosed with it. I will read it, at a propitious moment, near the holy tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us.

You tell me that you are despairing of your moral situation. You observe, indeed, successions of elevations and falls. You will consult on this subject Iggeres HaKodesh of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*. This text is printed at the end of the Siddur* Me'ah She'arim, p. 30a, in the section "To understand this good counsel." No doubt one of the chassidim* of your city possesses this Siddur*. You will also consult the Torah Or [1], Parshas Vayeishev, in the maamar* entitled "Shir HaMa'alos."

Concretely, you know the proverb [2] of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, who reported it in the name of his father [3], according to which everything that disturbs the study of Torah and tefillah* presumably has a source that is not pure. Sometimes, the yetzer hara* dons a silken frock coat.

Your letter seems to indicate that these thoughts prevent you from studying Torah and davening* as one should. From the moment, how can one doubt their origin? They must therefore be repulsed. And the means of arriving at this is also explained in Tanya*, beginning from chapter 26. May Hashem grant you success.

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו עם הפ"נ המוסגר בו, אשר אקראהו בעת רצון על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע.

ומה שכותב במכתבו אשר נשבר לבו ממצבו ברוחניות, כיון שרואה בעצמו שהוא במצב של עולה ויורד, הנה יעיין בזה באגה"ק לרבינו הזקן בעל התניא והשו"ע שנדפסה בסוף הסידור מאה שערים דף ל' ע"א ד"ה להבין עצה היעוצה כו' ובטח נמצא סידור זה אצל מי מאנ"ש ב... כן יעיין בזה בתורה אור פרשת וישב ד"ה שיר המעלות.

ובהנוגע לפועל, הנה ידוע פתגם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר בשם כ"ק אביו, אשר כל ענין המבלבל לתורה ועבודה בטח מקורו לא טהור והיצה"ר לפעמים מתלבש הוא אין א זיידענעם סערטוק, וכיון שכפי הנראה ממכתבו מבלבלים אותו מחשבות הנ"ל מלימוד כדבעי ותפלה כדבעי, הרי הספק מאין באות ובמילא עליו לדחותם, והעצה לזה ג"כ מבוארת בתניא פרק כ"ו ואילך. והשי"ת יצליחו.
