To the officers and members of the synagogue

of the Chabad center of Tel Aviv,

may Hashem grant you long life,

Greetings and blessings,

I was pained to learn that the minyan* [1] for tefillah* is not gathered each day in your shul*. Moreover, it is sometimes even completely closed.

In all times and in all places, shuls* have been "miniature sanctuaries," from which Torah* emanates to the entire neighborhood. How much more so must this be the case, it goes without saying, in the present era and in our Holy Land, which will soon be rebuilt and restored by our righteous Moshiach*, for upon it "the eyes of Hashem are continually fixed, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year."

In these days of the month of Shevat, among which is the hilula* of our nasi*, my father-in-law the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, the Shabbos* preceding it and the one following it — these are propitious days to strengthen oneself and to find suitable means to rectify all this, so that your shul* be, in the future, a place of tefillah* and study, open each day and each night, where the revealed part of the Torah* and chassidus* will be taught publicly.

You know the tradition [2] introduced by the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and posek* of the hidden part of the Torah*, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and posek* of the revealed part of the Torah*, according to which "in view of the mesirus nefesh* he gave for chassidus*, the Heavenly Beis Din* decided that in all that concerns Torah*, yiras Shamayim*, and good conduct, those who are connected to him and follow his way will have the upper hand," as reported in the summaries and notes on Tanya*, end of p. 122.

I address to you my blessing for success in what has just been said, for the "miniature sanctuary," and more generally for all your accomplishments.

שלום וברכה!

נצטערתי להשמועות אשר לא בכל יום יש מנין להתפלל בציבור בביהכ"נ שלהם, ולא עוד אלא שבאיזה ימים בית הכנסת אפילו סגור לגמרי.

בודאי למותר להעיר אשר אם בכל הזמנים ובכל המקומות היו בתי כנסיות ובתי מדרשות - "מקדש מעט", שמהם תצא תורה לכל הסביבה, על אחת כמה וכמה שההכרח בזה גדול פי כמה בזמנינו זה ובפרט בארצנו הקדושה, תבנה ותכונן על ידי משיח צדקנו, אשר עיני ה"א בה מראשית השנה ועד אחרית שנה.

ובימים אלו דחודש שבט, בו יום ההילולא של נשיאנו כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, ובשבתות שלפניו ושלאחריו עת רצון היא וימי סגולה להתחזק ולמצוא דרכים המתאימים לתקן את הנ"ל באופן אשר מכאן ולהבא יהי' בית הכנסת ובית מדרש פתוח בכל יום ובכל לילה, מקום תפלה ותורה, תורה ברבים, בתורת הנגלה ותורת החסידות.

וידוע מסורת רבינו הזקן בעל התניא (פוסק בנסתר) והשלחן ערוך (פוסק בנגלה) אשר "בגלל המסירת נפש הלזו על תורת החסידות פסקו בבי"ד של מעלה, אשר בכל ענין של תורה יראת שמים ומדות טובות תהי' יד מקושריו והולכי בעקבותיו על העליונה" (קצורים והערות לספר לקוטי אמרים, סוף עמ' קכ"ב).

בברכת הצלחה בענין הנ"ל הוא מקדש מעט ובפעולותיהם בקדש בכלל.
