To the rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem

and undertakes a sacred mission,

Rav Yaakov [1],

Greetings and blessings,

I duly received your letter, which dealt with the modifications introduced by the Alter Rebbe* in the written alphabet [2], compared to other customs [3]. Your letter seems to indicate that you have not directly received a tradition in this matter. You have only observed parchments which are reported to have been written by Chabad scribes. You therefore do not know what is written intentionally and what is not.

You are an expert in this domain, and it would therefore be good for you to do research on this subject, in order to find someone who has directly received a tradition concerning the form of the letters. I thank you in advance for what you will do in the matter.

I enclose for you the chassidic maamar* delivered last year on the day of the hilula* [4] of my father-in-law the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us. You will no doubt show generosity and make it available to as many as possible. Hashem will give you success.

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו ותוכנו שינוי צורת האותיות בכתב ע"פ רבינו הזקן לגבי הנהוג אצל השאר, וכנראה ממכתבו שאין זה אצל כת"ר קבלה איש מפי איש אלא שדייק ומדייק בפרשיות שקבלה שנכתבו ע"י סופרי חב"ד, שבזה הרי יש ספק מהו בדיוק ובדוקא ומהו באקראי ולא בדוקא, אולי כדאי שכת"ר שי' כמומחה בזה יחקור אפשר ימצא מקבל איש מפי איש בציור אותיות כנ"ל, ות"ח מראש...

מוסג"פ המאמר שנאמר ביום ההילולא של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, אשתקד, ובטח תהי' עינו טובה ויזכה בו גם אחרים והשי"ת יצליחו.
