Greetings and blessings,

I received in its time your letter in which you mention your state of health. You should have consulted your spiritual guide [1], who would have helped you organize your studies [2] without their contravening your health.

You know the decision of our holy Torah*, reported by the Rambam* in Hilchos Deos, beginning of ch. 4, according to which "having a healthy body is part and parcel of the service of Hashem." And no doubt you have also heard the saying of the Alter Rebbe*, reported by the HaYom Yom* on the date of erev* Rosh Hashanah*: "One has no idea of the worth of a Jewish body."

One must therefore conform to the prescriptions of the doctors, eat, drink, and rest in the suitable manner, in order to maintain your physical health. In this way, Hashem will grant you success also to daven with fervor and to study Torah* with the appropriate yiras Shamayim*.

I enclose a chassidic maamar* in which you will see that it is necessary to weaken the body only when it is under the dominion of the nefesh habahamis*. On the other hand, there is no question of endangering its health, which emanates from the nefesh ha'Elokis*.

I duly received your request for berachah* to attain yiras Shamayim*.

With my blessing for success in the study of Torah*, in fervent tefillah* filled with yiras Shamayim*, in good health,

בעתו קבלתי מכתבו בו כותב אודות מצב בריאותו. והנה צריך הי' להתייעץ עם המשפיע שלו שיסדר בשבילו סדר לימודיו באופן שלא יגע בבריאותו כלל, שכבר ידוע פסק תוה"ק (רמב"ם הל' דיעות ריש פ"ד) שהיות הגוף בריא ושלם מרדכי השם הוא, ובודאי ידוע לו פתגם רבינו הזקן (נדפס בהיום יום ער"ה) מי ווייסט גאר ניט ווי טייער עס איז דער גוף פון א אידען, ובמילא צריך למלאות אחרי הוראת הרופאים ולראות שסדרי אכילה ושתי' ומנוחה יהיו כנצרך לבריאותו בריאות גופו, ואז יצליחו השי"ת ג"כ בעבודת התפלה ובלימוד התורה ביראת שמים כדבעי.

מוסג"פ המאמר אשר בו יראה ג"כ שהכוונה בהחסרון דתוקף הגוף הוא רק אם זהו בממשלת נפש הבהמית, אבל לא ח"ו בבריאותו הנוגע להנפש האלקית.
