Igrot Kodesh · Letter 240 — Para Adumah · The Leader Who Descends to Lift Others
Volume 2 · Letter 73
By the grace of Hashem,* 13 Tammuz 5706, To the erudite Chassid,* who fears Hashem, the great Rav, Rav A.[1], I greet you and bless you,
I would like to thank you especially, you yourself and all those who follow you, for your appreciable assistance during the collection for the benefit of the Keren HaMatzot*[2], which functions under the responsibility of the Merkaz L'Inyanei Chinuch,* with the Sephardic* community of your city.
The work of the Keren HaMatzot is particularly important. This fund provides spiritual assistance to our refugee brothers. They have suffered, they are wounded, but, thank Hashem, the wicked have not reached their spirits. They wish to bind themselves to their Father Who is in the heavens, by putting into practice the Mitzvot* of Mezuzah,* Tzitzit,* and Tefillin.* Thank Hashem, there are many who concern themselves with their material needs. We must therefore not forget their spiritual needs, without the satisfaction of which life is no life at all.
We are confident that you will continue to lend your assistance to these important endeavors, as well as to all the other activities of the Merkaz L'Inyanei Chinuch.
To the assistance provided to the Keren HaMatzot, one must add the necessity of convincing those who do not perceive its importance. Beyond the means of putting these Mitzvot into practice, one must therefore prove to them, with gentle words, that it is important to observe them.
Some ask why one must burden oneself with such a burden. Is it not sufficient to seek one's own perfection, one's elevation, stage by stage, in holiness? Why must one impose upon oneself a fall and become embroiled in controversy? Why even engage in dialogue with those who, while alive, are considered...[3]? This entails, furthermore, neglecting the study of Torah* and the observance of Mitzvot.
To all those who reason thus, one must respond based on last week's Parasha,* as the Midrash Rabbah* 19:4 explains, which states:
"Each time the Holy One Blessed Be He taught a point to Moshe,* He indicated to him how one who had contracted the impurity could be purified. When He pronounced Parshat Emor,* 'say to the Kohanim,* Moshe said to Him: Master of the universe, if impurity is found, in such a case, how does one obtain purification? He did not answer him. Then the face of Moshe turned red. When He pronounced the Parasha* of the red heifer,* Moshe inquired again[4]."
Now, one can question this. Why did Hashem not answer the questions in the order in which Moshe asked them, as had been the case previously? What is more, Rabbi Levi, one of those who gives the teaching in the Midrash Rabbah, also speaks in tractate Gittin* 60a and says that Parshat Emor and that of the red heifer were pronounced on the same day. Why then were they not placed adjacent?
The explanation is briefly as follows. The impurity contracted by contact with a corpse is different from all others. Jews are defined as "living," as it is said: "You who are attached to Hashem your Hashem, all of you are alive today." Before the sin[5], this attachment was manifested throughout the entire world and Adam,* the first man, said to all of creation: "Come, let us bow down and prostrate ourselves." At that time, death was inconceivable.
As long as this attachment subsisted, even if sins and transgressions weakened it, it remained relatively easy to change one's behavior and strengthen this bond. Death, on the other hand, detaches one from its source, in the Hashem of life, as the Tanya* states at the end of chapter 24. When Jews arrived at this, this spiritual death caused physical death and justified all the laws of impurity contracted by contact with a corpse.
It is for this reason that, in all the preceding cases, Hashem was able to immediately indicate to Moshe how to recover purity, for the connection to the source of purity was not entirely severed and its revelation therefore remained possible. By contrast, death and impurity, in their material and spiritual dimensions, cause an interruption of this revelation, which must then be obtained at a higher level.
In such a case, an immeasurable distance separates the impurity from its purification and one therefore finds a corresponding remoteness in the enunciation of their laws, as the Torah recounts them. Indeed, to promulgate a law in the Torah is to bring it into existence. And our Sages* say that "the Torah describes common practice"[6].
This will enable us to understand the words of the Mishnah* which states that "the most severe impurity is that of death, which spreads even in the tent[7]" and one cannot raise an objection from the case of the leper, which our Sages have already explained elsewhere.
Three forms of vitality of the body are distinguished: that which is specific[8], that which is global[9], and that which transcends both preceding aspects. Three human needs correspond to them: food, clothing, and a house. One who attains the highest level of vitality therefore also introduces impurity into the tent[10].
Despite such an interruption, Hashem also taught Moshe the means of purifying oneself from the impurity contracted by contact with a corpse. Hashem further specified that He would reveal the reason to him, but that for all others this would remain a Decree transcending logic. He told him that the red heifer he was to prepare would be eternal[11].
The Mitzvot that we cannot currently fulfill in their material dimension nonetheless subsist in their moral dimension, as is explained regarding prayer and sacrifices[12].
The same applies to the purification of impurity contracted by contact with a corpse, which appears to us to be a Decree[13]. Why then should we devote ourselves to the needs of a person afflicted by it, who is thus separated from his source, may Hashem protect us? How could such a person purify himself? What is more, he renders, momentarily, impure those who devote themselves to his needs[14]!
Despite all of this, the red heifer sacrificed by the Moshe of each generation, that is to say by our masters, exists always. All Jews, especially those who are closest, must consult him in this regard. He will then purify those who are impure and confer upon them eternal life.
With my blessing of immediate Teshuvah,* immediate redemption, M. Schneerson, Director of the Executive Committee[15]
