Igrot Kodesh · Letter 242 — Pidyon HaBen · Redemption of the Firstborn

Volume 2 · Letter 76

By the grace of Hashem*,

22 Tammuz* 5706,

To the young man who fears Hashem and dedicates himself to communal needs, Rav* Y.[1],

I greet you and bless you,

I reply to your invitation for the Pidyon HaBen* of your son Shalom DovBer.

May Hashem grant that it take place at a good and fruitful moment. May you raise this child, together with your wife, to Torah*, to the marriage canopy*, and to good deeds, in material and spiritual abundance.

The Pidyon HaBen* finds its origin in the salvation granted to the firstborn of Israel, when Hashem smote those of Egypt. And our Sages say, in tractate Shabbat* 133b, that one must identify with Hashem: 'Just as He is gracious and merciful, so too should you be.'

In this instance, such is the divine service of each person. Whoever has the ability to save Jewish children[2], all considered 'my firstborn son, Israel,'* from assimilation and to bind them to the Hashem* of life through the Torah of life, contributes to the fulfillment of the words of the verse 'you are all alive today.'

You have merited being entrusted with this mission by my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*, and you will therefore do everything in your power to be a worthy vessel for it and to give it concrete application.

May Hashem grant that we all witness, very soon, the redemption that our Father in Heaven will perform for His firstborn son, Israel, whom He will liberate from this final exile. Then my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*, will lead us to greet our righteous Mashiach*, very soon, Amen, may it be so.

Rav* Menachem Schneerson,

Director of the Executive Committee[3]

The Pidyon HaBen* is not practiced by Kohanim* and Leviyim*. It is stated in tractate Sanhedrin* 39a that 'our Hashem* is a Kohen*' and the Likkutei Shoshanim*, by Rabbi Shimshon of Astropoli*, distinguishes in this regard a level of High Priest* and a level of an ordinary Kohen*. But this does not in any way contradict what has just been said[4].

Indeed, a Kohen* and a Levi* are not required to redeem their son for five silver cycles* precisely because that amount is insufficient, taking into account the deliverance that Hashem performed for them in Egypt, when their bodies were sanctified, as the verse Bamidbar* 8 states. All of this is self-evident.

Notes

(1) Rav* Yaakov Yehuda Hecht, of New York.

(2) Rav* Hecht's work was directed especially toward children.

(3) Of Merkaz L'Inyanei Chinuch*.

(4) The fact that Hashem will perform, at the time of the redemption, the Mitzvah* of Pidyon HaBen*.
