Igrot Kodesh · Letter 243 — Vocalization of Leratsot · Siddur Textual Variants

Volume 2 · Letter 77

By the grace of Hashem*,

Thursday, 4 Menachem Av* 5706,

To the great Rav*, erudite Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav* A. E. Axelrod[1],

I greet you and bless you,

I reply to your letter of last week:

A) Regarding the vocalization of the word 'Leratsot'* in the expression 'Rach Leratsot'*, 'easy to appease,' in the Aneinu* prayer, we find differences among the printed Siddurim* and prayer rites. And it is impossible to determine whether these are scribal errors or the version of the Siddur* in question.

Thus, the Siddur* Sha'ar HaShamayim*, from the Shnei Luchot HaBrit*, published in Amsterdam in 5477[2], in Pirkei Avot* 5:11, writes 'Leratsot' with a Patach* under the Reish*, whereas in the Warsaw edition of 5642[3] one finds 'Leratsot' with a Kamatz* under the Reish* and a Tzerei* under the Lamed*.

By contrast, the Ya'avetz*, in his Lechem Nekudim*, commentary on tractate Avot*, writes 'Lirtsot' with a Chirik* under the Lamed* and a Sheva* under the Reish*. He asserts that the version vocalized with a Patach* is an error.

Likewise, the Siddur* Avodat Yisrael*, corrected according to several manuscripts and Siddurim*, explains that the same version appears in the oldest manuscript Siddur* he was able to find, on parchment, dating from 5066[4]. This version is therefore the authoritative reference.

It is also found in the Pirkei Avot* of a Siddur* printed in Rostov, which is said to have been proofread by the Rebbe*[5]. Nevertheless, in the Pirkei Avot* of the Siddur* Torah Or* and of the one published in Warsaw in 5627[6], one finds 'Leratsot' with the Lamed* bearing a Tzerei* and the Reish* bearing a Kamatz*.

In the Tal* prayer[7] of this Rostov Siddur*, one finds 'Leratsot' with a Sheva* under the Lamed* and a Patach* under the Reish*, as the context allows us to establish. Of his own initiative, Rav* A. Ch. Na'eh*[8] adopts this version in his commentary on the Siddur*.

Since I am addressing this subject, I will clarify another change. The expression used here is indeed 'Rach Leratsot'*, whereas the Mishnah* says 'Noach Leratsot'*[9]. Perhaps this change is explained by the desire to arrange the clauses of this prayer in alphabetical order. This interpretation is, however, difficult to accept.

B) I had no doubt about the text of the Avinu Malkeinu* prayer recited on a public fast, before receiving your letter. One must say 'Zochreinu L'chayyim Tovim'*, 'remember us for a good life,' and not 'for the book of life,' just as we say[10]: 'remember us for life... and inscribe us in the book of life.' For what connection is there between remembrance and the book? Moreover, even upon cursory analysis, one may ask whether it is possible to be inscribed in those books during the course of the year, outside of the Ten Days of Repentance*.

I have just conducted a search in the Siddurim* and found that in the Siddur* Beit Ya'akov*, called the Siddur* of the Ya'avetz*, published in Lemberg in 5664[11], it says 'remember us for life' but not 'in the book of life.' The same is true in the Siddur* Otzar HaTefillot*, which is relatively precise. In the Siddur* of the Shnei Luchot HaBrit*, published in 5477[2], and in the Siddur* Beit El*, which the Ya'avetz* published personally, the text of the Avinu Malkeinu* for the public fast does not appear as an independent section.

On the other hand, in the Siddur* Sha'ar HaShamayim* printed in Warsaw in 5642[3], it is written: 'remember us in the book of those who have a good life.' It seems that this is likewise the view of Rav* H. A. Bichovski* in the Siddur* he published.

Furthermore, I found a new explanation in the Siddur* Tefillah LeMoshe*, which states, after the Shacharit* prayer: 'Some have the custom of reciting the Avinu Malkeinu* on a public fast. They should take care not to say the formula "renew for us a good year," nor the following five formulas introduced by "inscribe us."'

The Siddur* Beit Ya'akov*, cited above, mentions two opinions: either not to say 'inscribe us' at all, or to replace that term with 'remember us.' However, it does not speak of 'renew for us a good year,' nor of 'in the book of life.' And none of this appears in the Siddur* Beit El*.

With my blessing of immediate Teshuvah*, immediate redemption,

Rav* Menachem Schneerson,

Director of the Executive Committee[12]
