Volume 9 · Letter 126

B"H

24 Sivan 5714,
Brooklyn.

To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Avraham Chaim (Rav A. C. Lewinson, of Yerushalayim),

Greetings and blessing,

I received your letter of 8 Sivan, then the book Teshuvos Beis Hillel.

May Hashem grant that you assume your role and your mission, by adorning and aggrandizing the Torah, which has the effect of strengthening pure fear of Hashem; for, as our Sages teach in tractate Shabbos 31a, "when the fear of Hashem is his treasure, it perpetuates itself, as it is said: 'Faith, in your time, lavishes salvation, wisdom, and knowledge.'"

In our days, there is no other means to obtain such a result than by putting into practice the decision of the Arizal, which the Alter Rebbe — author of Tanya* and Decisor of the hidden part of Torah, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and Decisor of the revealed part of Torah — comments on in Iggeres HaKodesh. According to this decision, it is, in our days, "permitted" and even "a mitzvah*" to "reveal this wisdom" (that of the hidden part of Torah, of Chassidus*). And you will consult the introduction of his disciple, Rabbi Chaim Vital, to Shaar HaHakdamos, which specifies at length this idea, employing even terrible and frightful terms.

You know also the decision of Shulchan Aruch* Orach Chaim, at the beginning of chapter 98, according to which it is fitting to meditate on the greatness of Hashem before the beginning of prayer. Now, it is impossible to attain this if one does not possess the knowledge required for it. It is useless to say more.

But, the intensity of the veil (imposed by the world) makes it that, despite this evidence, it remains necessary to justify the utility of such a study.

I address to you postage-paid mailing vouchers for your personal expenses. May Hashem accord you success.

With my blessing,

P.S.: You reproduce, in your letter, the explanation relative to Havayah, Havayah (in his book, the Rebbe of Munkatch, citing Rabbi Moshe Leib of Sasov, recalls the affirmation of our Sages in tractate Rosh Hashanah 17, relative to the two Names Havayah, Havayah, which are mentioned in the thirteen Attributes of divine mercy, according to which the first precedes the sin of man, while the second follows it. Now, asks the Rosh, why is it necessary to reveal this Name linked to the Attribute of mercy before the sin? He explains therefore that it is here a question of an idolatrous thought, preceding the effective sin. In a general manner, thought does not link itself to action. By contrast, this is effectively the case when it is a question of idolatry, as it is said: "In order to seize the children of Yisrael in their heart." Such are the words of the Rosh. In consequence, the two Names are useful uniquely for what concerns idolatry. Then, when Mashiach* comes, very soon and in our days, the idols will disappear from the earth and they will be destroyed. There will therefore no longer be idolatrous thoughts. From then on, there will no longer be two Names Havayah, but one alone, corresponding to the Attribute of mercy that one cannot do without. May Hashem grant that we soon perceive the unity of Hashem, through His Mashiach*, representative of His people, very soon and in our days). Nevertheless, you do not bring all the necessary explanation:

A) The Rosh says that thought is linked to action, for what concerns idolatry. This Name is therefore not enunciated before the sin.

B) You explain that, when Mashiach* comes, the unity of Hashem will be proclaimed, and from then on, only one Name will be necessary. Now, how to affirm that, in the world to come, one will make disappear the thirteen points of the beard, which correspond to the thirteen Attributes of divine Mercy, which, according to several among the first Sages, begin with the first Name Havayah? What is more, do our Sages not say, "I am the Same as before the sin"?

The explanation is therefore briefly the following:

A) The Tanya*, in chapter 16, specifies the difference between the fact of linking thought to action and considering as if the latter had been realized. You will consult, on this matter, the Korban Nesanel.

B) It is clear that neither of the two Names Havayah will be suppressed, chas veshalom*. It is, in fact, the separation that is found between these two Names that will disappear, in the world to come. The unity of Hashem will therefore be that of these two Names. You will also consult the Zohar, vol. 3, page 138a, and the Likkutei Torah, page 59a.
