Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter of 14 Sivan, in which you question me about your son, who experiences no ardor for study. You ask me what I think of it.

I do not understand the meaning of this question. Our Sages say, indeed: "Until your hand is placed on the neck of your words," and they specify that it must be so from the age of sixteen years — that is, precisely the age of your son, as you say in your letter. You must therefore take all measures, in a serene manner, so that your son consecrates himself fully to the study of Torah, according to his means. Thus, he will know success.

I am surprised by what you tell me concerning the Yeshivah*. Indeed, you are part of its teaching staff and you therefore share, with all the direction, the entirety of the responsibility in the matter, as in every communal domain.

For, one cannot consider that this public character liberates the individual from his duty. Each teacher, each supervisor assumes his function with self-sacrifice, in a sincere manner. It is inconceivable that his attitude not influence the entirety of the direction, the other teachers, the other supervisors.

And, all this adds itself to the decision of our Sages, in tractate Kiddushin 40b, which is cited by the Rambam, according to which "a man must always consider that he is found on a balance in equilibrium. By a single good action, he makes it incline, for himself and for the entire world, toward the side of the good."

I await a detailed letter from your part, in which you will specify to me what your contribution is in the domains that are entrusted to you. This addition will be as wide as possible. And you will also make me precise propositions in order to improve the situation in what is entrusted to the responsibility of other persons. Quite obviously, the more details you furnish me, the better it will be.

With my blessing,
