To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Greetings and blessing,

I received with pleasure your letter of 21 Sivan, in which you announce to me good news, since you tell me that your daughter Shterna Freida has had a son, in a good and fruitful moment.

May Hashem grant that his parents lead him into the covenant of our father Avraham, in a good and fruitful moment. And, just as he will conclude this covenant, he will also be led toward Torah, the wedding canopy, and good deeds.

You yourself will witness all that and you will conceive much Chassidic satisfaction, from them and from all your children, in good health and with broadness of mind. You will also be able to give good news in the other domains that you cite in your letter and that I will mention near the holy tomb of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us.

You also ask me for advice on the name that it is fitting to give to the child just born.

As is known, my father-in-law, when one posed this question to him, replied that he did not intervene in the matter. And, one can understand his position if one consults the writings of the Arizal, for example Shaar HaGilgulim, page 23a, and also Emek HaMelech, first gate, end of chapter 4. The writings of the Arizal are, moreover, cited by Or HaTorah at the end of parshas* Bereishis and by the Likkutei Amarim of the Maggid (of Mezeritch).

Indeed, Hashem suggests to the parents the name that befits the son or the daughter just born, in function of their soul. Various texts of Chassidus* establish that it is indeed so, and you will consult, in particular, the Likkutei Torah Behar, page 41c. Indeed, the letters constituting the name are bound to the vitality of the soul and the body.

נעם לי לקבל מכתבו מכ"א סיון, בו מבשר טוב אשר בתו שטערנא פריידא ילדה בן למזל טוב, ויה"ר שהוריו שיחיו יכניסוהו לבריתו של אברהם אבינו בשעה טובה ומוצלחת וכשם שיכניסוהו לברית כן יכניסוהו לתורה ולחופה ולמעשים טובים, ועיני כבודו שי' רואות ורוות מהם ומכל יו"ח שי' רוב נחת חסידותי מתוך בריאות הנכונה והרחבת הדעת ויוכל לבשר טוב גם בשאר הענינים שמזכיר אודותם במכתבו ושאזכיר על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע.

ומ"ש שאלת עצה כיצד לקרות שם לילד הנולד שי'.

הרי ידוע מענה כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר בכגון דא שאינו מתערב בענינים אלו והוא מובן ע"פ מ"ש בכתבי האר"י ז"ל (בשער הגלגולים הק' כג. וראה עמה"מ ש"א ספ"ד) הובא גם באו"ת ס"פ בראשית (ובלק"א להה"מ) אשר מלמעלה ניתן לההורים הרעיון איך לכוון לשם הבן או בת הנולדים, שם השייך לנשמה זו, וכמבואר בכ"מ בדא"ח וראה ג"כ לקו"ת בהר (מא, ג) אשר אותיות השם שייכים לחיות הנשמה והגוף.
