Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter of 6 Tammuz, communicating to me the two phrases that could be engraved on the tombstone. Concretely, you can mention the titles figuring in both of them at once. Nevertheless, it is, to my mind, more exact and more current to enunciate this phrase in the third person and not in the first. In consequence, it is necessary to suppress the expressions "our father," "our glory." You will find these two phrases enclosed, in return.

I observe with surprise that once again, as is your custom, you say nothing of your actions, in the place where you find yourself, for Yiddishkeit* and Chassidus*. Certainly, such is your habit and this has therefore become mine, but this changes nothing of the necessity to modify this practice.

It is high time that, in every place to which you arrive, you keep present in your mind that you have been a student in the Yeshivah Lubavitch of my father-in-law, the Rebbe. This must appear with evidence, not only on Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur, not only when you find yourself within the four cubits that are your own, but also at all times and in every place to which you go.

You will therefore influence your surroundings and, if you have a sincere desire to succeed in it, you will have the means. Quite obviously, all the justifications that you can find for such a situation can only emanate from the side of evil.

במענה על מכתבו מו' תמוז עם ב' נוסחאות של המצבה, הנה יכול לצרף התוארים משני הנוסחאות גם יחד, אבל לדעתי נכון ומצוי יותר שיהי' הנוסח לא בתור מדבר בעדו אלא כשלישי המדבר ובמילא יש להשמיט התיבות אבינו כו' תפארתנו, ומוחזר פה הנוסחאות.

לפלא שכדרכו גם עתה, אינו מזכיר דבר ע"ד פעולותיו במקום בו נמצא בעניני יהדות וחסידות בפרט, ואף שכבר הורגל בזה ובמילא גם אני הורגלתי בזה הנה אין זה מתקן הענין וזה כבר מזמן רב שבאה העת שבכל מקום בואו יזכור שלמד בישיבת תומכי תמימים של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר ובמילא צ"ל רישומו ניכר לא רק בר"ה ויום הכפורים וכה"ג ולא רק כשהוא נמצא בד' אמות שלו מיוחדים אלא בכל זמן ובכל מקום בואו ובהשפעה גם על הסביבה וכשרוצים באמת לעשות הנ"ל מוצאים האופנים והדרכים, וכל התירוצים בזה באים מהצד דלעו"ז כמובן.
