To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Shlomo Shneur Zalman (Rav Sh. Sh. Z. Katznelenbogen),

Greetings and blessing,

I received your letter of 10 Tammuz, with the list of names that accompanied it and of which I gave reading, near the holy tomb of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, on the luminous day of 12 Tammuz, that of his birthday and of the beginning of his liberation, which is equally ours, for the body follows the head.

You speak of enlarging the activity of the grouping of the women and young girls of Chabad, by creating a new branch in your city, near your house. You will do so only if this does not diminish the activity of the branch that already exists. Moreover, the meetings will not be held on the same days, so that there cannot be any excuse (of not participating in the activities of the one, on account of those of the other).

One must respect all that scrupulously, for it is said that "the beginning of a dispute is like opening a floodgate." I have good hope that you will pay close attention to all that. If this is effectively the case, it is good that these branches multiply, which will also increase the number of participants.

Perhaps it would be good, in a diplomatic manner, to arrange that one branch be for the young women and another, for those of a more mature age. Indeed, the presence of the older ones sometimes prevents the young from coming to the meetings. Quite obviously, this will be done very diplomatically and without any ostentation. You must understand what I mean.

You speak of distributing tzedakah* pushkas. I received your letter on the luminous day of 12 Tammuz, the date on which an appeal is made for the Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak Lubavitch institutions. In addition to the distribution of the pushkas of the Colel Chabad, which you will doubtless continue, you will therefore also introduce this one and Hashem will confer upon you success.

If you do not have pushkas available, you can take those that you wish and place on them a label, with the name of this institution. In such a case, one is not considered as changing the destination of a tzedakah* (which is a prohibition).

With my blessing of success and in the expectation of your good news,

To the Chassidim, everywhere that they find themselves, may Hashem accord you long life,

Greetings and blessing,

This year, at the Chassidic gathering of 12 and 13 Tammuz, the Rebbe explained, in particular, to what point it is important, on the day of the birthday and the liberation of the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, to accord to whoever is attached to the one whose joy we celebrate and intends to fortify this attachment, the possibility of doing so, by means of a concrete action that will arouse his satisfaction.

It is for this reason that the Rebbe asked, in the course of this gathering, that one adopt, this year again, the practice that has been instituted for this day, that of participating in a special appeal for the benefit of the schools bearing the name of the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us — Yeshivos and Talmudei Torah, in Eretz Yisrael and in North Africa — which are called Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak Lubavitch.

Quite obviously, those who attended this gathering immediately put the request of the Rebbe Shlita into practice and they submitted, in a sealed envelope, their contribution to the special collection of 12 and 13 Tammuz.

In order to accord to those who could not be present the merit of taking part in this custom, we consider it our duty to inform you of it.

As the Rebbe Shlita specified, it would have been preferable for each one to have his contribution reach within a week, that is, between the date of the birth of the Rebbe and that of his bris milah*, and therefore before 19 Tammuz. Nevertheless, those who did not have the possibility to do so at this date will still be able to participate subsequently. It is fitting, however, to do it as soon as possible.

We hope that those who receive this letter will be able to acquire this merit for themselves, but will also confer it upon others, so that all maintain and fortify their attachment to the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us. Thus will be obtained the divine blessings, for oneself and for all the members of one's family, the satisfaction of all one's needs — children, health, and material prosperity, in abundance, materially and spiritually.

With my blessing,

The secretariat of the Rebbe Shlita,

You will kindly inscribe, on your contribution, "12 Tammuz."
