Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter of 4 Tammuz, in which you tell me that you pursue your studies and that certain ones reproach you for it, affirming that you must contribute to assuring the subsistence of the family.

You know the ruling of our holy Torah, according to which a Jew can provide for his needs only by placing his trust in Hashem, Who nourishes each one. And, commenting on the verse "If you walk in My statutes," Rashi explains: "by making your efforts bear on the Torah." In consequence, the more you study Torah, the more you consecrate yourself to it with ardor and enthusiasm, conformably to the terms of our Sages, "by making your efforts bear on the Torah," and all the better will be realized the promise of our Sages according to which "the earth will give its produce." It is in this way that a man receives the blessing of Hashem, permitting him to provide for all his needs and those of his family.

One must not listen to those who tell you that, by interrupting your study of Torah, chas veshalom*, you will obtain, in a more ample manner, the blessing of Hashem, Who gives the Torah. It is doubtless useless to say more.

You will be able to show the present letter to the direction of the Yeshivah. This one will also know how to persuade your parents that this option is the right one. May Hashem grant that you be able to announce to me good news, in all these domains.

במענה על מכתבו מד' תמוז בו כותב שלומד ב... ויש מפריעים בעדו בטענה שהוא צריך לעזור בפרנסת הבית.

הנה הרי ידוע פסק תוה"ק שהדרך שהאיש הישראלי יקבל פרנסתו שזהו תלוי רק בהשם יתברך הזן ומפרנס לכל הרי זה בא כמש"נ אם בחקתי תלכו ופירש"י שתהיו עמלים בתורה, ובמילא מובן שמה שילמוד תורה וילמוד במסירה ונתינה הדרושה וכלשון רז"ל שתהיו עמלים בתורה הרי דוקא עי"ז תקוים הבטחת הקב"ה ית' ויתעלה ונתנה הארץ יבולה וגו' ברכת השי"ת בכל המצטרך לאדם ולמשפחתו. ולא כמו שאומרים שעל ידי זה שיפסיק מלימוד התורה ח"ו ירבה לו הקב"ה נותן התורה פרנסה והאריכות אך למותר, ויכול להראות מכתבי זה להנהלת הישיבה ובטח גם הם יוכלו להשפיע על הוריו שיחיו בכיוון האמור לעיל והשי"ת יצליחו לבשר טוב בכל הנ"ל.
