Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter of 6 Tammuz, in which you tell me that you will soon be nineteen years old. Immediately after that, you describe to me the disagreement that opposes you to the direction of the Yeshivah. Indeed, you are incapable of conforming to what is asked of you and of subjecting yourself to its schedules.

You must understand that the beginning of your letter contradicts its end. If you are not yet nineteen years old, it is impossible that you have the pedagogical experience and the manner of leading of a man several decades old. If you decide that such a practice is impossible, that such another is indispensable, you must know that you can err, especially when those who have practiced education for many years and are not directly involved, in this case, have a position that diverges from yours.

Moreover, your decision had for consequence the abandonment of your study and the departure from the Yeshivah and its discipline. You must therefore yourself have the certitude that there is here an attack and an incitement of your evil inclination. It attempts, by all possible means, to set the man apart from the service of his Creator and it presents itself to him under the cover of the fear of Hashem and of respect for one's mother. Then, it highlights the numerous failings of the direction of the Yeshivah.

If you wish to entrust yourself to my opinion, you must return to the Yeshivah, study Torah with ardor and enthusiasm. Then, you will know success also for what concerns your state of health.

You will take counsel with a specialist physician, in this domain, and he will doubtless indicate to you how to organize your study so that at the same time your soul and your body be holy.

All therefore depends on you. You must take the sincere decision to consecrate yourself to the Torah of Hashem, at least for some time yet, and to follow His ways. It is thus that you will know success.

במענה על מכתבו מו' תמוז, בו כותב אשר בקרוב ימלאו לו תשע עשרה שנה ותיכף אחר זה ממשיך מויכוחו עם הנהלת הישיבה שאינו יכול לקיים דרישתם ללמוד מתאים לסדרי הישיבה וכו'. הנה בטח גם הוא מבין שזהו סתירה מרישא לסיפא כי אם בקרוב ימלאו לו תשע עשרה שנה בודאי אי אפשר שיהי' לו הנסיון בחינוך ובאופני הנהג[ה], כאדם של כמה עשיריות שנים ובמילא מובן אשר החלטותיו בזה שזה אי אפשר וזה מוכרח וכו' הרי עלולים לטעות ובפרט כשאלו העוסקים במשך כמה שנים בחנוך ואינם נוגעים בדבר אומרים ההיפך מהחלטתו הוא, ובנוסף על זה ההנה כיון שהמסובב מהחלטתו הוא שהזניח את הלימוד יצא מהישיבה ומהמשמעת שם וכו' הרי בטח קרוב לודאי גם בעיניו שזהו מתעלולי ופתויי היצר הרע המתנכל בכל הדרכים האפשרים לנתק את האדם מעבודת הבורא, ובא אליו בטענות של יראת שמים כבוד אם, מוצא כמה אשמות בהנהלת הישיבה כו'.

ואם לדעתי ישמע יחזור להישיבה על מנת ללמוד שם במסירה ונתינה ואז יצליח וגם בהנוגע לבריאות הנה כשיתייעץ עם רופא דמקצוע זה בודאי יסדר לו לימודו שתהי' הנשמה בריאה וגם הגוף בריא, ואין הדבר תלוי אלא בו שיחליט באמת לעסוק בתורת ד' עכ"פ עוד משך איזה זמן וללכת בדרכיו ואז יצליח.
