Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter of 8 Tammuz, in which you tell me that you do not know the date of the passing of your father. You will take counsel, for this, with the Chassidim, who will speak of it with your mother and determine the date that can be considered as the closest to that of the passing. It is that one that you will choose.

You ask me about the possibility of beginning to put on tefillin* on the occasion of your twelfth birthday. It is true that such a practice exists, but I have not observed that it is followed by the Chassidim, who do not modify the date at which an orphan begins to put them on.

You will therefore apply what is said in the calendar HaYom Yom, at the date of 2 Menachem Av, and you will begin to wear tefillin* two months before your Bar Mitzvah*.

במענה על מכתבו מח' תמוז בענין שאינו יודע יום היארצייט של אביו ז"ל. הנה יתייעץ בזה עם אנ"ש והם יתדברו עם אמו תחי' לברר היום שיש לומר שהוא היותר קרוב להיארצייט, ולקבוע בו.

בהנוגע למ"ש אודות הנחת תפילין למלאת לו י"ב שנה. הנה אף שמובא מנהג כזה אבל לא ראיתי נוהגין ככה בין אנ"ש לשנות התחלת תפילין ליתום ויתנהג ע"פ המובא בלוח היום היום ב' מנ"א להתחיל הנחת תפילין בשני חדשים לפני הבר מצוה.
