Greetings and blessing,

I have duly received your letter, in which you ask me for a blessing for this man and all the members of his family. I will mention his name, so that he obtain the satisfaction of his needs, when I am at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us.

You ask me whether you should settle in another country. You know the opinion of our master and our leader, ruler of the entire Jewish people in exile, the Rambam*, expressed in his Mishneh Torah*, Laws of Opinions, beginning of chapter 6, according to which "one must attach oneself to the righteous, be permanently in the presence of the sages, distance oneself from the wicked, who walk in darkness, so as not to imitate them. And, if one does not have the possibility of settling in a country whose customs are wise, one will remain alone and burrow into caves, crevices and deserts."

Consequently, if it is conceivable, as you say in your letter, that settling in a new place would put you in contact with such persons, it is quite clear that it is preferable to remain alone or to establish yourself in the desert.

Hashem, Who provides for the needs of each person, will also satisfy yours, in a manner that is as it should be and peaceful. Thus, you will be able to redouble your ardor in the study of our holy Torah and in the accomplishment of its mitzvos*, in the best fashion.

נתקבל מכתבו בקשת ברכה אודות מר... שי' וב"ב שי' ואזכירו להמצטרך לו בהיותי על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע. ומה ששואל אם יעתיקו למדינה אחרת, הנה כבר ידוע פסק אדוננו ומורנו ראש כל בני הגולה הרמב"ם והוא בידו החזקה הל' דיעות ריש פרק ששי, צריך אדם להתחבר לצדיקים ולישב אצל החכמים תמיד כו' ויתרחק מן הרשעים ההולכים בחשך כדי שלא ילמוד ממעשיהם כו' ואם כו' אינו יכול ללכת למדינה שמנהגי' טובים כו' ישב לבדו יחידי כו' יצא למערות ולחוחים ולמדבריות.

ובמילא מובן שבאם יש מקום לומר כפי שכותב במכתבו שע"י העתקה למקום חדש יהיו בסביבה או בהשפעת אנשים כנ"ל הרי מובן שטוב יותר לישב יחידי או לילך למדבר מאשר להעתיק לשם, והשי"ת הזן ומפרנס לכל ימציא להם פרנסתם בכשרות ובמנוחה ויוכלו להוסיף אומץ בלימוד תורתנו הק' ובקיום מצותיו בהידור.
