Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter of 22 Tammuz, in which you tell me that you have drawn somewhat closer to the study of Chassidus* and to Chassidic* practices. You indeed say "somewhat" and, by that very fact, you acknowledge that it is not enough.

Our Sages say that "one who tells you he made efforts but did not meet with success — do not believe him." It therefore depends on you to intensify your engagement, to the fullest extent possible, doing all that is expected of you — that is, with regard to study, learning Chassidus*, in addition to the revealed part of the Torah, with genuine enthusiasm and ardor. Indeed, the profound dimension of the Torah, which is its soul, vivifies the study of its revealed part and the practice of the mitzvos*.

You tell me that the Bar Mitzvah* of your brother will be celebrated on the 9th of Av, may Hashem grant that this day be transformed into joy and gladness. He will therefore begin the study of the holy Tanya* and this will be a preparation, a good beginning for serving Hashem, so that there be fulfilled in him the terms of the verse: "The matter is very close to you, in your mouth and in your heart, to accomplish it." Indeed, the Tanya* is based on this verse, as the Alter Rebbe* specifies on the title page of this book.

You surely keep the three studies which are the practice of everyone and which my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, instituted. They bear upon the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, the Tanya* and are well known (i.e., Chitas*). You will also make sure that your friends keep them as well. The merit of all depends on you.

במענה על מכתבו מכ"ב תמוז בו כותב שהתקרב קצת ללימוד החסידות ולדרכי החסידות וכו'. הנה כיון שגם הוא מדגיש קצת במילא מובן שמכיר שאין זה מספיק וע"פ מרז"ל יגעת ולא מצאת אל תאמין הנה בו הדבר תלוי להוסיף בהנ"ל כפי יכולתו שזהו כפי שדורשים ממנו והיינו בלימוד כפשוטו ללמוד תורת החסידות נוסף על לימודו בתורת הנגלה במסירה ונתינה ושקידה אמיתית אשר לימוד פנימיות התורה נשמתא דאורייתא מוסיפה חיות בלימוד הנגלה וקיום המצות.

ולהודעתו של הבר מצוה של אחיו... שי' בתשעה באב - יהפך במהרה לששון ולשמחה - בודאי יתחיל אחיו בלימוד ספר התניא קדישא ותהי' זה הכנה והתחלה טובה לעבודת השם בדרך שיקוים בו קרוב אליך הדבר מאד בפיך ובלבבך לעשותו שעל זה מיוסד התניא וכלשון רבנו הזקן בשער הקדש.

בודאי שומר שלשת השיעורים השוים לכל נפש מתקנת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר

זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע והם בחומש תהלים ותניא הידועים ומשתדל שגם ידידיו ישמרום וזכות הרבים תלוי בו.
