Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter, in which you allude to this man who has lost his children, may Hashem grant that it be so for no Jew.

One must, above all, verify whether his wife observes the laws of family purity and whether she goes to a mikveh* as our holy Torah requires — that is, one filled with spring water or rainwater, but not with running water that circulates in pipes that allow it to be measured. One will also verify the situation regarding the other laws (of family purity, which will all be observed with the same scrupulousness).

It will also be necessary to ascertain that their union did not have the effect of offending a Jewish man or woman (to whom one or the other had previously promised marriage). Finally, one will have the tefillin* of the husband and the mezuzos* of the house checked.

May Hashem grant them success, so that they give good news in all of these domains. Thus, the wish of their heart will be fulfilled and they will have a healthy child.

במענה על מכתבו בו כותב אודות מר... שי' אשר ל"ע ולא על כל ישראל נאבדו לו בניו.

הנה לכל לראש צריך לברר אם שומרת אשתו דיני טהרת המשפחה ומקוה כדרישת תורתנו הק' היינו במי מעיין או מי גשמים ולא במימי העיר הבאים ע"י כלי המודד וכו' וכן בהנוגע לשאר דינים אלו, גם יש לברר אם לא הי' בהשידוך שלהם איזה נגיעה בכבוד בת או בן בישראל, כן יש לבדוק התפילין של הבעל והמזוזות בביתם והשי"ת יצליחם שיבשרו טוב בכל הנ"ל ובמילא גם ממילוי משאלות לבבם לטובה בזרעא חייא וקיימא.
