To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, the Rav Shlomo Chaim (Rav Sh. Ch. Kasselman, of the Holy Land; see, concerning him, letter no. 2767),

Greetings and blessing,

I wrote to you some time ago concerning vacations. You know my position in this domain, which is briefly the following. In certain places, one leaves the Yeshivah* and returns home during the period of Selichos* and the greater part of the month of Tishrei* (see, on this subject, letters no. 2258, 2879 and 2945). Now, in every Yeshivah*, and in particular in one that promotes Torah permeated with the fear of Hashem, such an attitude, obviously, deeply offends logic.

If, for any reason, it is necessary to grant vacations during these weeks, one must endeavor, to the fullest extent possible, that the students spend the greater part and the most essential part of this period in the Yeshivah*.

It follows that every teacher, every rector, whose presence is necessary for the good of the students, in accordance with what has just been said, has the obligation and the merit of being in the Yeshivah* during these days, even if the members of his family are not particularly satisfied with it — and it is probable that this will be the case. Nevertheless, the merit of the many depends on them, and it is surely unnecessary to say more.

... מה שכתבתי מכבר אודות זמן החופש, הנה ידוע השקפתי בזה והנקודה שמה שיש נוהגין שלימי הסליחות ורוב חדש תשרי יוצאים הנם מכותלי הישיבה ונמצאים בביתם, הרי בכל הישיבות בכלל ועאכו"כ בישיבה שענינה ת"ת ביראת שמים דוקא הוא היפך השכל לגמרי כמובן. וגם אם מפני איזה סיבה שתהי' מוכרחים ליתן חופש גם בשבועות הנ"ל הרי יש להשתדל בזה ביותר וביותר שעכ"פ רוב ימים הנ"ל ועיקרם ימצאו התלמידים דוקא בכותלי הישיבה, ומזה מובן ומוכרח ג"כ שעל הר"מ והר"י השייכים לתועלת התלמידים בכיוון הנ"ל חובתם וזכותם ביחוד להיות ג"כ בכותלי הישיבה במשך ימים אלו אף שאפשר וקרוב שבני ביתם לא יהיו שבעי רצון כ"כ מסדר כזה אבל זכות הרבים תלוי בהם, והאריכות בזה אך למותר...
