To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, the Rav N. N. (Rav Nissan Nemanov, of the Yeshivah* of Brunoy; see, concerning him, letter no. 2641),

Greetings and blessing,

You speak to me of a young man who has touched (i.e., shaved) his beard. He must be approached with friendship, especially since his older brother conducts himself well.

One must also explain to him what the Derech Mitzvosecha*, vol. 2, says in its commentary on the verse "He is merciful." This text emphasizes that the thirteen points of the beard correspond to the thirteen Attributes of Divine mercy. Those who cannot, by right, demand of Hashem (because they do not merit it) their sustenance invoke His kindness and His mercy. Consequently, "measure for measure" (adopting toward Hashem the attitude they expect from Him), they must keep their beard complete. You will consult this text in detail.

As a result, a young man who wishes to earn his livelihood honorably and to marry well needs the mercy of Hashem. He must therefore preserve intact the thirteen points of the beard. You will know how to find the words to explain all of this to him.

You also ask me about one of your acquaintances. A physician told him that it would be unnecessary to operate on him, that it suffices for him to watch his food and drink. This man must therefore conform to such a prescription, strengthen his trust in Hashem, Who "heals all flesh and acts wondrously." Tranquility of mind is one of the most effective treatments for such ailments.

Likewise, this man says that he purchased a house in order to derive a profit from it, but that he is unable to resell it. He must therefore form a partnership with Hashem by promising a sum to tzedakah*, a bit more than a tenth of the profit or, if possible, nearly a fifth of it. It is certain that this Partner will bring him blessing and success, in conformity with the assurance of our Sages, according to which "you shall tithe in order to become wealthy."

When he observes Divine Providence in this way, it would be good for him to purchase another house, subsequently, with the aim of realizing a profit. Furthermore, he will continue to work, without investing himself too intensely and stopping to rest, to the extent possible.

... מ"ש אודות האברך שנגע בזקנו, הנה צריך הי' להרבות עליו ריעים, ובפרט שאחיו הגדול ממנו מתנהג כדבעי.

וגם להסביר לו, על פי המובא בס' דרך מצותך חלק ב' ע"פ והוא רחום, אשר י"ג ת"ד הם נגד י"ג מדות הרחמים, וכל אלו שאין יכולים לתבוע הצטרכותם מהשי"ת בדין כ"א במדת חסד ורחמים, הרי מדה כנגד מדה - יש להם להשאיר בשלימות התיקוני דיקנא, עיי"ש בארוכה. ובמילא מובן, שאברך הצריך להסתדר בפרנסה ובשידוך טוב וכו' ומוכרח לרחמי השי"ת בכלל, עליו להדר בהי"ג ת"ד. ובודאי ימצא האותיות המתאימות לזה.

בשאלתו אודות מכירו... כיון שיש רופא אומר שאין צריכים נתוח, ורק שיזהר באכו"ש וכו', הנה עליו להתנהג מתאים להוראה זו, ולהתחזק בבטחונו בהשי"ת הרופא כל בשר ומפליא לעשות. ומנוחת הנפש היא אחת הרפואות היותר מועילות למיחושים כשל הנ"ל.

כן במה ששואל הנ"ל, שאין מזדמן לו קונים על הבית שקנה בשביל פרנסה. הנה יקח את השי"ת לשותף - ע"י שיבטיח לצדקה, מעט יותר ממעשר מהריוח , ומה טוב קרוב לחומש - ומובטח שותף הנ"ל להביא ברכה והצלחה מתאים להפסק עשר בשביל שתתעשר.

וכאשר יראה השגחה פרטית בזה, הרי כדאי שגם אח"כ יתעסק בקניית בית לפרנסה ע"ד זה נוסף על מה שיתעסק ג"כ במלאכתו - אן אימפעט, ובהפסקי מנוחה כפי הדרוש.
